Serine is one of the twenty natural amino acids. The non-essential amino acid is formed in the body from other metabolites, such as the amino acid glycine. This Doctor's Best product contains SerinAid®, a registered, high-quality form of the amino acid, and is produced in accordance with EU directives.
A phospholipid is a fatty substance, or lipid, consisting of a phosphate group, a glycerol group, a nitrogen-containing alcohol group and two long fatty acid tails. Different types of small molecules can be attached to the phosphate group, such as serine or choline. Structurally, phospholipids are lipid-protein complexes where lipids and proteins bind together, for instance to form a membrane around every cell in the body. Much is still unknown about the effect of phospholipids in the body. The metabolism of phospholipids is impressive; however, more research is needed to understand what exactly the role of phospholipids is after ingestion and how they interact with the various processes that make up our complex metabolism.
Phospholipids in lecithin
Phospholipids are common in the body and are therefore very essential. Since the early twentieth century, the beneficial effects of dietary phospholipids have been regularly studied. An important source of phospholipids is lecithin, which is found in egg yolks, soybeans, sunflower seeds and rapeseed. Lecithin is often added to foods as a natural 'emulsifier'. The most common phospholipids in food are phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol and phosphatidylserine. Phospholipids are also sometimes used in foods as antioxidants.
Dietary sources of phospholipids
All plant and animal foods contain phospholipids. The concentration and composition of food phospholipids vary depending on the food source, for example: animal or vegetable. Phospholipids from cold water fish mainly contain unsaturated omega-3 fatty acids. Phospholipid concentrations can also increase during drying of milk or whey, for example. Animal sources of phospholipids include eggs, milk, meat and fish, seafood and krill oil. Vegetable seeds, grains and wheat starches are also rich sources of phospholipids. Finally, phospholipids are present in certain fruit and vegetable products such as spinach, orange juice and lemon juice.
