Folinic Acid by Seeking Health

Seeking Health’s Folinic acid is a supplement containing 800 mcg of pure, bioavailable folate per lozenge contained in the form of folinic acid calcium salt. This form of folate (B9) can be easily converted into L-methylfolate, the main form of folate in the body. For those sensitive to methylated nutrients, folinic acid is better tolerated than L-methylfolate. Inside the body folinic acid can be easily converted to the active form of folate, when the body requires it. Seeking Health also has a folic acid supplement in the form of convenient capsules, namely folinic acid - Capsules. If you prefer an active, methylated form of folate, you will want to consider Seeking Health’s L-5-MTHF - Lozenges available from Ergomax.

The importance of folate

Folate, also called vitamin B9 or B11, has a number of essential functions in the body. Folate contributes to normal cell division, supports the production of red and white blood cells, helps the immune system, contributes to mental resilience, helps fight fatigue, plays a role in the production and breakdown of homocysteine, and contributes to normal amino acid synthesis. In recent years, the active form of folic acid has become increasingly preferred over regular folic acid, because the conversion of folic acid to 5-MTHF (the active form of folic acid) is problematic in a relatively large number of people. For this supplement the non-methylated form of methylfolate is chosen. The product is therefore particularly suitable for people who are sensitive to methylated nutrients. Moreover, Seeking Health Capsules are free from most common allergens and their vegetable form is suitable for both vegetarians and vegans.

Evolution of epigenetics

Epigenetics is a science that has been changing and evolving significantly in recent years. More and more we begin to understand that our DNA, or genetic predisposition, does not have all the clues, but that it is the 'epigenome' that effectively runs the DNA by turning certain genes 'on' or 'off'. So we may have mapped our entire DNA, but we are far from there yet. After all, our DNA is comparable to a computer, where it depends on the software (the epigenomes) in which way the computer is being used. The main epigenetic processes in our body are the methylation processes, in particular DNA methylation. A lot of research is currently being done into the influence of diet and lifestyle on our epigenomes and to what extent epigenetic influence can also be passed on to subsequent generations. In sum, the science of epigenetics studies variations in gene expression, which, however, do not cause changes in the DNA sequence itself.

The Methylation Process

Every minute, trillions of methylation processes take place in all cells of our body, which in turn affect thousands of other bodily processes. Methylation is a controlled transfer of a methyl group primarily to proteins, amino acids, enzymes and DNA. Methylation is involved in the maintenance and repair of our DNA within our cells and tissues. Substances that have the ability to donate a methyl group are called methyl donors. B vitamins, vitamin C, biotin, zinc, folic acid and betaine, among other compounds, can function as a methyl donor. Methyl groups play an important role in gene expression, since they have the ability to switch our DNA on and off. It is not without reason that they are one of the most researched molecules in epigenetics. Research indicates that methylation responds to environmental factors and decreases with age. This has made the relationship between health and the ability to methylate a frontier research area.

About Seeking Health

From an early age, Dr. Ben Lynch, founder of Seeking Health, was interested in the relationship between health and gene expression, and studied natural medicine, molecular biology and epigenetics. In his recent book Dirty Genes, he describes how having 'contaminated' genes can be the cause of countless health problems and shows how you can optimize the functioning of your genes through the right diet and lifestyle. In recent years he helped thousands of clients, physicians and health care professionals in the use of these insights and therefore is currently one of the most consulted experts in the field of epigenetics.
