Alpha and beta CIS

Alpha and beta GOS differ in origin (legumes and beef, respectively) and in the structure of the molecule. Beta-GOS appeared on the market first and is obtained by enzymatic hydrolysis from the lactose of cattle. Alpha-GOS are derived from the galacto-oligosaccharides that also occur naturally in legumes.

Fermentation of prebiotics in the intestines

Prebiotic fibers are not digestible and therefore have no direct nutritional value. They pass through the stomach and the upper part of the small intestine intact. In the lower part of the small intestine and in the large intestine, the fibers are fermented by various types of bacteria and yeasts. They produce a series of substances with benefits for the host. These include vitamins, endocannabinoids and short chain fatty acids such as butyrate, lactate, acetate and propionate.

GOS makes for an excellent prebiotic, in addition to other prebiotics such as fructooligosaccharides (FOS), xylooligosaccharides (XOS), soy oligosaccharides (SOS) and inulin.
