FAQ
Why should I take Beef Bone Marrow and what makes Ancestral Supplements different?

In traditional cultures bone marrow was the most sought-after part of the animal: rich in healthy fats, fat-soluble vitamins, stem-cell-supporting peptides and the minerals of the bone matrix. Ancestral Beef Bone Marrow is 3,000 mg of freeze-dried bovine/ovine 'whole bone extract' (bone matrix, marrow and cartilage), not defatted, and together with Beef Liver it is the starter product Ancestral recommends. Traditional cultures around the world ate animals from nose to tail and regarded the organs as the most nourishing part: liver, heart, kidney, spleen and glands contain more vitamins, minerals, peptides and cofactors per gram than muscle meat. The 'like supports like' principle from those traditions holds that by eating an organ you take in the same building blocks that the corresponding organ in your own body uses. Ancestral Supplements puts that nourishment into capsule form, for anyone who does not like the taste of organ meat, cannot get hold of it or does not want to prepare it every day. So it is not an isolated extract or a medicine, but freeze-dried food. Ancestral Supplements uses only organs from cattle (and, for the thymus and this bone extract, also sheep) that graze outdoors all year round in New Zealand and Australia: grass-fed and grass-finished, with no added hormones, antibiotics, pesticides or GMOs. The organs are freeze-dried raw (not heated, not defatted), so the heat-sensitive vitamins, enzymes and fat-soluble nutrients are preserved. There are no fillers or stearates; besides the beef gelatine capsule, this product contains only organic rice concentrate and silica. Every batch is tested by an independent laboratory and the company operates under GMP certification.

Which nutrients does Beef Bone Marrow naturally contain?

Per 6 capsules: 3,000 mg of freeze-dried bovine/ovine whole bone extract with bone marrow fat (saturated and monounsaturated, with alkylglycerols and CLA), the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K2, collagen, glycosaminoglycans, calcium, phosphorus and magnesium from the bone matrix, and marrow-specific peptides and growth factors. No liver. Levels are not standardised.

How do I take the capsules and how many per day?

The standard dose is 6 capsules per day (3,000 mg), taken all at once or spread over the day, with or without food. For the first few days start with 1 to 2 capsules and build up by one capsule every few days until you reach 6, so your body can adjust. At 6 per day, a jar of 180 capsules lasts 30 days. Because this is freeze-dried food, you can also open the capsules and mix the powder into a smoothie, yoghurt or (not too hot) food; expect a pronounced meaty taste.

Can I get a reaction when I start?

Most people notice nothing unusual when they start. Around 5 to 10 percent, especially people with a sensitive immune system or an autoimmune condition, experience mild complaints in the first week such as nausea, headache, tiredness or an unsettled stomach. This is usually temporary. If it happens, build up more slowly (1 capsule per day, adding one every 3 days), take the capsules with food and a large glass of water, and lower the dose if it persists. If the complaints do not disappear within a few days of lowering the dose, stop and consult your doctor or therapist.

What is the difference from Living Bone and Living Collagen?

Living Bone is standardised for minerals (250 mg of calcium and 100 mg of phosphorus from microcrystalline hydroxyapatite per capsule) and is the bone mineral product, 1 capsule per day. Living Collagen is pure cartilage for the joints. Beef Bone Marrow is the complete, fat-rich bone extract with marrow for the fat-soluble nutrients and the marrow itself. For strong bones choose Living Bone, for joints Living Collagen, and as a fat-rich staple Beef Bone Marrow.

Does Beef Bone Marrow contain liver, and does it fit into a low-fat diet?

Bone marrow contains no liver, so virtually no vitamin A; it is the ideal partner for Beef Liver. It is, however, a high-fat product (marrow consists largely of fat): 3 g provides about 2 g of fat. That fits perfectly into a ketogenic, carnivore or Paleo way of eating; people with a gallbladder problem or fat intolerance start with a lower dose taken with food.

Is this suitable for children, during pregnancy or alongside medication, and can I combine it?

Adults and children can use this product; after all, it is food. For children the dose is adjusted to body weight: a child of 20 to 30 kg, for example, takes 1 to 2 capsules a day (open them into food if you like). During pregnancy and breastfeeding there is no objection to organ meat as such; Beef Bone Marrow contains no liver and therefore no vitamin A load from liver, but do consult your midwife. If you take medication or have an autoimmune condition, consult your doctor first. Combining is fine: Ancestral products are food and can be used alongside each other and alongside other supplements. Beef Bone Marrow does not count towards your vitamin A intake from liver (see the question about liver); hormone-containing glands (thyroid, adrenal, testicle) are best not all taken at full dose at the same time. A popular base is Beef Liver or Beef Organs plus Beef Bone Marrow; to that you add a specific organ for your goal.

Does this product contain allergens and how should I store it?

The product contains bovine and ovine bone (and beef gelatine as the capsule) and is therefore not suitable for vegetarians, vegans or people with a red meat allergy (alpha-gal). Beyond that it contains no gluten, dairy, soy, nuts, egg, fish, shellfish, sugar, colourings, preservatives or fillers. New Zealand and Australia are officially free of BSE (mad cow disease). Store the jar closed in a cool, dry and dark place, such as a kitchen cupboard; it does not need to go in the fridge. The freeze-dried powder attracts moisture, so close the jar immediately after use and leave the silica gel sachet inside. Unopened and sealed, the product keeps until the date on the label; once opened, preferably use it up within 3 months.
