Blood rain and pink flamingos
In English, Haematococcus pluvialis is called the blood rain alga. When rainwater puddles, birdbaths or gutters dry up, the alga produces large amounts of astaxanthin and colours the water deep red. Via krill and shrimp, the same substance ends up in salmon, lobster and flamingos, which owe their pink or red colour to it.
