Atrantil is a patented formula developed by Dr Kenneth Brown, an American gastroenterologist. The formula contains three plant ingredients: Quebracho colorado extract, horse chestnut extract and peppermint extract. Each ingredient has its own effect, and the unique synergistic combination works specifically in the small intestine, where it ensures a good balance.

The three plants in the formula

Quebracho colorado is a hardwood tree from South America whose bark is rich in polyphenols. The horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum, also known in English as the conker tree) provides the second extract and peppermint (Mentha balsamea Willd, also known as Mentha x piperita) the third. Together they form 550 mg of patented blend per capsule. The extracts of M. balsamea, Quebracho and Conker Tree complement each other seamlessly to create the most beneficial effect possible.

Flavonoids and saponins

The active substances in Atrantil belong to the flavonoids and the saponins. These are substances that occur naturally in plants. There are many different types and variations, each with its own effect. To make use of their physiological effect, it is important not only that the extracts are of good quality, but also that they are standardised. As a result, each capsule contains the right amount of active substances and the product works optimally. The flavonoids from Quebracho bind with hydrogen and the saponins from Conker Tree bind to the reductase enzyme, which stops methane production.

Why Atrantil is not a probiotic

Atrantil is not a probiotic. It contains no bacterial strains, only the patented combination of three plant extracts that do their work locally in the small intestine. If you also want to build up your gut flora alongside Atrantil, choose Atrantil Pro: the same patented blend, supplemented with three spore-forming Bacillus strains. Many people start with one or two jars of Atrantil and then switch to Atrantil Pro for maintenance.

Dosage and what you can expect

Take 2 capsules with meals, 3 times a day. Keep this up until you notice an improvement and then switch to a maintenance dose of, for example, 1 capsule with breakfast, lunch and dinner. Atrantil works quickly, within a few hours of taking it. After 7 to 10 days, a big difference can often be noticed. Atrantil is well documented and usually causes no side effects. However, taking it can occasionally trigger a Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction. Depending on each person's individual internal state, reactions may therefore occur and results may vary from person to person.

04 / What we may claim

Botanical claims and the transitional arrangement.

Framework
EU 1924/2006
Article 28(5)
Subject
Peppermint
(botanical, on hold)

In Europe, we may only make health claims about food supplements that have been assessed and authorised by the EFSA and are listed in the official EU register.

For plant substances, things are different. The assessment of botanicals was suspended years ago, and until it has been completed, the claims submitted fall under the transitional arrangement of Article 28(5). They may be used, but they have not been approved. This is stated with each claim below.

For Quebracho, there is nothing in the register. The claims below concern peppermint, one of the three extracts in the formula.

Peppermint is good for digestion.

Curator's note
Three plants instead of bacterial strains, devised by a gastroenterologist who ran into the problem in his own practice.
Selected by Ergomax

Most gut supplements are about the large intestine and about bacterial strains. Atrantil does the opposite: no live bacteria but three standardised plant extracts, with a formulation developed specifically with the small intestine in mind. That is an unusual choice on this shelf and it is the reason we stock it.

What appealed to us is that the formula comes from clinical practice. Dr Kenneth Brown spent years doing clinical research into medicines for irritable bowel complaints and then founded his own research company. The combination is protected by a US patent and the extracts are standardised, so that every capsule contains the same amount of active substances.

About the brand

KBS Research, briefly explained.

KBS Research

A research company founded by a practising gastroenterologist.

KBS Research was founded in 2012 by Dr Kenneth Brown, a gastroenterologist in Plano, Texas, together with Brandi Scott-Hoy. Brown is board certified in both gastroenterology and internal medicine. He studied medicine at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and completed his fellowship in gastroenterology and hepatology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. He is also director of clinical research at Digestive Health Associates of Texas.

He founded the company after years of clinical research into medicines for irritable bowel complaints, with the aim of developing natural formulas for digestion. The first product was Atrantil, launched in 2015: a patented food supplement made from carefully selected plant extracts, developed as an alternative to probiotics. Within the company, Brown is chief medical officer and he remains involved in developing and testing the products.

08 / Frequently asked questions

What you still wanted to know.

Atrantil was developed by the American gastroenterologist Dr Kenneth Brown for people with a bloated stomach, gas, abdominal pain and sluggish bowel movements, complaints that are often linked to an overgrowth of methane-producing micro-organisms in the small intestine (SIBO/IMO). The three plant extracts (quebracho, horse chestnut and peppermint) work locally in the small intestine: the polyphenols from quebracho bind hydrogen, the saponins from horse chestnut inhibit the enzyme that forms methane and peppermint relaxes the intestinal wall. Many users notice less gas within a few hours; after 7 to 10 days there is usually a clear difference in bloating and bowel movements. Results vary from person to person and depend on the severity of the complaints.

Start with the loading dose: 2 capsules with each meal, so 6 capsules per day, for at least 10 to 20 days. Always take the capsules with food, so that the active substances reach the small intestine together with the food. As soon as your complaints have clearly decreased, switch to a maintenance dose of 1 capsule with breakfast, lunch and dinner (3 per day). For persistent complaints, you can continue the loading dose for longer, up to a few months. A jar of 90 capsules lasts 15 days on the loading dose and 30 days on maintenance; a full loading course therefore usually requires 2 jars.

Atrantil contains only the patented blend of quebracho, horse chestnut and peppermint (550 mg per capsule) and is intended to restore the balance in the small intestine. Atrantil Pro combines that same blend with three spore-forming probiotics (Bacillus subtilis HU58, B. coagulans and B. clausii, 3 billion per daily dose). The Bacillus strains convert the large polyphenols from quebracho into smaller, more easily absorbed compounds such as urolithins and then help build up the gut flora. Rule of thumb: choose Atrantil for acute complaints of gas and bloating or if you first want to 'clear things out'; choose Atrantil Pro if you also want to support your gut flora at the same time, for recurring complaints, or as maintenance after a course of Atrantil. If you are sensitive to probiotics, start with regular Atrantil.

We advise against starting regular probiotics (Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains) at the same time: with an overgrowth in the small intestine, extra bacteria can actually make the complaints temporarily worse. Start with Atrantil first and only add probiotics once the complaints have improved, or choose Atrantil Pro straight away, with spore-forming Bacillus strains, which cause fewer problems in this respect. Atrantil can be used alongside a course of antibiotics such as rifaximin and is also used by doctors to prevent relapse after such a course; discuss this with your practitioner. Combinations with digestive enzymes, betaine HCl, magnesium or ox bile are no problem.

Atrantil is generally well tolerated. During the first few days, a temporary 'die-off' or Herxheimer reaction can occur as the micro-organisms in the small intestine die off: more gas, abdominal cramps, headache or fatigue. This is usually a sign that the product is taking effect and disappears within a few days. If the reaction is too intense, build up more slowly (for example 1 capsule per meal) and drink enough water. Occasionally someone experiences somewhat harder stools because of the binding effect; extra fibre, water or magnesium will help in that case. Always take the capsules with a meal to prevent stomach complaints.

Atrantil has not been studied in pregnant women, during breastfeeding or in children under 12; in those cases, only use it after consulting a doctor. Horse chestnut extract contains aescin, which can have a mild blood-thinning effect: if you use anticoagulants such as acenocoumarol, warfarin or newer blood thinners, consult your doctor or pharmacist first. Consultation is also advisable in the case of liver or kidney problems and when using medicines with a narrow therapeutic range. Atrantil contains no substances on the doping list.

Yes, Atrantil is a plant-based supplement that does not lead to habituation and can be used long term at the maintenance dose (1 capsule per meal); many people with recurring bloating or IBS-C complaints use it daily. Relapse usually occurs because the cause of the overgrowth persists: slow gut motility, too little stomach acid, a lot of fast carbohydrates or stress. So combine Atrantil with an eating pattern that suits your complaints (for example temporarily low-FODMAP), sufficient breaks between meals so that the gut can sweep itself clean, movement after eating and possibly Atrantil Pro as maintenance for the gut flora.

Atrantil contains no gluten, soy, dairy, nuts, artificial colourings or flavourings and is non-GMO. Horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) is botanically not a nut and not related to the edible sweet chestnut; people with a nut allergy can use Atrantil normally, but if you have a known allergy to horse chestnut or latex, consult your doctor. The capsule is plant-based, which makes the product suitable for vegetarians and vegans. If you have difficulty swallowing, you can open the capsules and mix the contents into a spoonful of yoghurt or apple sauce; it tastes bitter and slightly minty.
