Tu Youyou and Ge Hong
The Chinese researcher Tu Youyou found the key to artemisinin in a fourth-century text by the physician Ge Hong. He wrote that you should soak a handful of qinghao in cold water. From this she deduced that the active substance could not withstand heat, and with a low-temperature extraction she succeeded in 1972. In 2015 she received the Nobel Prize for it.
