Vitamin D3 from Doctor's Best contains 25 mcg or 1000 IU per softgel. Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) plays an important role in the human body. Origin

Vitamin D3 from the sun only in the summer

We acquire vitamin D3 by sitting in the sun largely uncovered, but avoiding sunburn, between May and October. This applies roughly to the hours between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm. It takes at least fifteen minutes to acquire enough vitamin D. Food contains a very small amount of vitamin D. So if we want to have a sufficient vitamin D supply, we have to rely on either the sun or supplementation.

D3 cholecalciferol sulfate

Vitamin D3 from the sun is not the same as vitamin D3 in a supplement. As soon as the skin is exposed to ultraviolet UVB radiation, vitamin D3 sulfate (cholecalciferol sulfate) is produced. Contrary to popular belief, this is not the same form as from supplementation, which is non sulfated vitamin D3 cholecalciferol. Ideally, we use the sun as much as possible in the summer to bring our vitamin D3 levels up to standard. During the winter months, supplementation can be a smart choice.

Additional recommendations

There are different ideas about the desired level of the amount of vitamin D in the blood. Reference values ​​in the Netherlands, for instance, start at a minimum of 30 nmol/l and are usually based on effects on bones and muscles. Vitamin D, however, plays a role in many other body processes as well. It is therefore important for anyone to maintain adequate levels.
