FAQ
Why should I choose Green Pasture's fermented cod liver oil instead of regular cod liver oil or fish oil?

Regular cod liver oil is extracted from the liver with heat and chemicals, then refined, bleached and deodorised; the natural vitamins are lost in the process and synthetic vitamins A and D are often added back. Green Pasture lets the cod livers lacto-ferment for months without heating, following a centuries-old Scandinavian method: the oil is released naturally and retains its natural vitamin A, D and omega-3 (EPA/DHA) in the form in which they occur in the liver. The result is a raw, unprocessed oil with a pronounced taste and smell, but also with its full natural nutritional value. Cod liver oil is one of the few foods that naturally contain vitamin A, vitamin D and the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA together. Vitamin A contributes to normal vision, healthy skin and mucous membranes and the immune system; vitamin D to strong bones and teeth, muscles and the immune system; EPA and DHA to normal heart function and DHA to brain function and vision. Regular fish oil contains only omega-3, no vitamin A and D. That is why people who eat according to the principles of Weston A. Price, GAPS or Paleo, and parents of young children, choose cod liver oil.

How much vitamin A and D does it contain and is that safe, also during pregnancy?

Green Pasture deliberately does not state standardised vitamin levels: it is a natural product that varies by season and batch and nothing is added. As a guideline, 2 capsules (1,000 mg) of fermented cod liver oil contain roughly half a liquid dose: about 500 to 1,250 IU vitamin A and 50 to 200 IU vitamin D, plus about 0.25 gram of omega-3. At the recommended dose you stay well below the European safe upper limit for vitamin A (3,000 µg = 10,000 IU per day). Therefore do not combine cod liver oil with other high-dose vitamin A supplements; a regular multivitamin is no problem. If you are pregnant, keep an eye on your total vitamin A intake and consult your midwife; Weston A. Price nutritionists actually recommend cod liver oil around pregnancy, but without extra vitamin A from other sources.

What is the difference between the capsules and the liquid cod liver oil?

Two capsules contain 1,000 mg of cod liver oil together, about half of the 2 ml (over 1,800 mg) from the liquid version, while a jar of capsules (2 months) costs more than a bottle of liquid (3 months). Liquid is therefore cheaper and more potent per dose, and easier to dose finely for children. The capsules are the choice for those who really cannot tolerate the taste and smell, travel a lot or want a fixed dose without fuss. If you want a full dose with capsules, take 4 a day.

How do I use the capsules and how long does a jar last?

Take 2 capsules a day with a meal containing some fat; if you want a full dose equivalent to 2 ml of liquid, take 4 capsules. Children from about 4 years who can swallow capsules: 1 capsule a day. A jar of 120 capsules lasts 60 days at 2 a day. You can also open the capsules and mix the oil into cold food; the contents are thickened with unbleached beeswax.

Do the capsules taste or smell of cod liver oil?

The plant-based capsule seals the oil, so you taste nothing when swallowing. Some people burp up the oil, especially on an empty stomach; therefore always take the capsules with food and keep them in the fridge, which reduces burping. A slight cod liver oil smell when opening the jar is normal and not a sign of spoilage.

Isn't fermented cod liver oil rancid?

No. The strong, sour and 'fishy' taste and smell are characteristic of lacto-fermented cod liver oil and do not mean the oil has gone off; a dark colour or sediment is normal too. Green Pasture has every batch tested by independent laboratories for oxidation (peroxide and anisidine values), heavy metals, PCBs and dioxins, and the results can be found on their website. If the oil has been stored unrefrigerated for months after opening and smells sharply of paint or turpentine, do not use it any more.

How do I store the capsules?

Unopened at room temperature away from light until the date on the label; after opening preferably in the fridge and use within 3 months. Keeping them cool keeps the oil fresh and reduces burping.

Does this product contain allergens and is the fish sustainably caught?

The product contains fish (cod liver) and beeswax; the capsule is plant-based (cellulose). No gluten, dairy, soy, nuts, egg or shellfish and no preservatives. Do not use with a fish allergy; if you take blood thinners or isotretinoin, consult your doctor. Yes. The cod is wild-caught in the cold waters around Alaska by an MSC-certified fishery; only the livers are used, a by-product of the fishery for consumption. Green Pasture is a small family business in Nebraska that ferments and bottles the oil itself and is a member of the Weston A. Price Foundation.
