Green Pasture's X-Factor Gold butter oil is concentrated butterfat from grass-fed cows, cold-centrifuged, in a 188 ml jar. It is naturally rich in vitamin K and contains fatty acids such as butyric acid and CLA. Vitamin K contributes to the maintenance of normal bones.

A spoonful of butter, without the butter

Butter oil is the fat from butter, without the water and the milk protein. At room temperature it is soft and creamy; in the fridge it becomes firmer. You can take half a teaspoon neat, but also spread it on bread or stir it into yoghurt, porridge or a hot drink. Better not to cook with it: the butter oil is made precisely without heating.

Where the cows graze

For years Green Pasture made the butter oil from the milk of its own cows in Nebraska. Because of its growth, the company now works with a farm in Argentina, where the cows graze on pastures with fresh, fast-growing grass. That milk is made into butter. The butter is cold-centrifuged into butter oil.

Vitamin K and blood thinners

Vitamin K plays a role in blood clotting. If you use blood thinners such as acenocoumarol or phenprocoumon, consult your doctor or anticoagulation clinic first, because extra vitamin K can affect your dosage setting. This does not apply to blood thinners such as DOACs.

Green Pasture liquid concentrated butter oil

Green Pasture's X-Factor Gold Concentrated Butter Oil in the natural flavour contains natural butter oil from cows that have had the right diet and living conditions. This product is concentrated using a careful centrifuge process that, according to the brand, Weston A. Price already described in the 1930s. Butter oil is a natural source of vitamin K2. According to Price, this fat-soluble vitamin complements vitamins A and D in cod liver oil. The butter oil is also available in capsule form.

Butter oil full of fatty acids

Green Pasture's concentrated butter oil is made using an unheated, natural centrifuge process, is naturally rich in vitamin K and contains fatty acids such as butyric acid, lauric acid and CLA. It also contains trace elements including manganese, zinc, chromium and selenium. Vitamin K contributes to normal blood clotting and to the maintenance of normal bones. Manganese supports the bones and energy levels and contributes as an antioxidant. Zinc also supports the bones and is also good for your hair, skin, vision and the cell division process, among other things. Selenium is also good for your hair, as well as for your nails, for maintaining healthy cells and tissues and for the body's defences.

Weston A. Price and Activator X

In the 1920s and 1930s, Weston A. Price travelled the world to study traditional diets. In his book Nutrition and Physical Degeneration he describes how in Switzerland the butter of cows grazing in spring was particularly valued. In that butter he found a substance he called Activator X, which today is often associated with vitamin K2. Price also believed that butterfat and cod liver oil complemented each other. That idea is the basis of Green Pasture's product line of butter oil, fermented cod liver oil and combinations of both.

Benefits

High-quality butter oil centrifuged the traditional way. Sourced from cows that have had the right diet and living conditions for making the richest butter oil. Source of vitamin K, the trace elements manganese, zinc, chromium and selenium, and fatty acids such as butyric acid, lauric acid and CLA. Green Pasture's X-Factor Gold Concentrated Butter Oil is a natural product with no added synthetic additives.

The story of Green Pasture's butter oil

Butter oil is centrifuged butter in which the oil has been separated from the proteins, making it easier to digest. Conventional butter oil is often heated, but no heat is used in making Green Pasture's butter oil, so that nutrients are better preserved. For a long time the family business Green Pasture produced its own butter oil, by keeping cows on pastures with fresh, fast-growing grass and milking them on the farm itself. Because of its growth and rising demand, Green Pasture decided to work with a farm in Argentina for part of the production process, one that meets the quality standards Green Pasture sets for its partners.

Essential fatty acids of sustainable quality

For Green Pasture, quality and care for the environment go hand in hand. The company works with the Weston A. Price Foundation and sets high standards for quality and environmental protection for all its partners. During the production process, from raw material to end product, various independent quality tests take place. Green Pasture is unique in its use of a mild, centuries-old, traditional fermentation technique that preserves natural antioxidants in the cod liver oil and means no heat has to be used. For its Fermented Cod Liver Oil, Green Pasture received the MSC label, which so far has been awarded to only a handful of fish oil companies worldwide.

About Green Pasture

Weston A. Price was the inspiration for Dave and Barbara Wetzel, founders of Green Pasture, to transform their dairy farm in Nebraska into a butter oil company in 2003. Price held that vitamin-rich butter oil could only be made from the butter of cows grazing on fast-growing green pastures. Today the company sells Concentrated Butter Oil, fermented cod and skate liver oil and other butter oil products worldwide. Dave and Barbara Wetzel received the Distinguished Entrepreneur Award from Nebraska in 2012.

(Green Pasture butter oil)

In Europe, we may only make health claims about food supplements that have been assessed and authorised by the EFSA and are listed in the official EU register.

Butter oil from grass-fed cows naturally contains vitamin K. The claims below apply to that vitamin. Green Pasture does not state a fixed amount, because it differs per batch. There are no authorised claims for butyric acid and CLA. Minerals such as zinc and selenium occur in butter oil in trace amounts at most.

About the brand

Green Pasture, briefly explained.

Green Pasture

A family business from Nebraska.

Green Pasture was founded in 2003 by Dave and Barbara Wetzel, who started a dairy farm in Nebraska. Inspired by the work of the dentist Weston A. Price, they first made butter oil from the milk of grass-fed cows. In 2007 they added fermented cod and skate liver oil.

Quality and production

Fermented, not heated.

Green Pasture extracts the oil from the livers by leaving them to ferment for months, without heat. The cod liver oil is tested by independent laboratories. The cod comes from an MSC-certified fishery in Alaska; the butter oil from grass-fed cows.

What you still wanted to know.

Take half a teaspoon per day, about 2.5 ml, or the amount your healthcare provider recommends. You can take Green Pasture's butter oil neat, spread it on bread or stir it into yoghurt, porridge or a hot drink. Better not to cook with it, because the butter oil is made precisely without heating. A 188 ml jar is good for about 75 servings. Keep it in the fridge after opening.

It is the same Green Pasture concentrated butter oil. The capsules are tasteless and easy to take with you: two per day, together 1000 mg. The butter oil in a jar is better value per serving and you can stir it into your food; half a teaspoon contains well over twice as much butter oil as two capsules.

Both consist mainly of butterfat. Ghee is made by heating butter until the water evaporates and the milk proteins turn brown and are skimmed off. Green Pasture's butter oil is not heated but centrifuged: in the process, the liquid fat separates from protein and water. As a result, butter oil has a milder, raw butter taste and no nutty note.

In the early years, Green Pasture made the butter oil on its own farm in Nebraska. Because of its growth, the company now works with a farm in Argentina, where the cows graze on pastures with fresh, fast-growing grass. The milk is made into butter and then cold-centrifuged into butter oil.

Centrifuging largely separates the fat from milk protein, water and milk sugar. Traces may remain, however. With mild lactose intolerance, butter oil is often well tolerated, but with a cow's milk allergy it is not suitable, because the product contains milk.

In the 1930s, the dentist Weston A. Price described how he recommended cod liver oil and butter oil from cows on fast-growing grass together, because he believed they complemented each other. Cod liver oil is naturally rich in vitamins A and D, butter oil in vitamin K and fatty acids such as butyric acid. Green Pasture bases the Royal Blend on that idea. This complementary effect has not been scientifically established.
