Calm-Z - Kanna extract with Zembrin® by Doctor's Best

Calm-Z with Zembrin® contains a patented extract of the plant species Sceletium tortuosum. Sceletium tortuosum is a succulent plant from the ice herb family native to South Africa. Also called Kanna, Channa or Chewable, the plant has been used for over 300 years by the San and Khoikhoi tribes, the oldest inhabitants of South Africa. The specific Sceletium tortuosum species from which Zembrin® is made is grown and cultivated in a joint project with the San people.

Patented South African brand Zembrin®

In 2009, the South African company Hg & H Pharmaceuticals Pty Ltd. obtained the first license to market and export the standardized extract of Sceletium tortuosum. The development of this specific extract under the brand name Zembrin® took over 10 years. The extract was ultimately created by a top team of international scientists and doctors. In the U.S. it enjoys GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) status, meaning it has been found safe as well as effective.

Sceletium tortuosum and the nervous system

The Sceletium tortuosum plant contains alkaloids. Alkaloids are among active substances found in many plants. S. tortuosum contains four major alkaloids: mesembrine, mesembrenone, mesembrenol, and mesembranol. Mesembrine and mesembrenone primarily contribute to the efficacy of Doctor's Best’s Calm-Z.

Cautionary note

Not much is known yet about possible interactions of Sceletium tortuosum and prescription medications. Be careful when using SSRIs, MAOIs, benzodiazepines, and medications for cardiovascular disease.
