What is Histamine Nutrients and what do people use it for?
Histamine Nutrients is a combination formula that pairs the enzyme DAO2™ (diamine oxidase from porcine kidney, 15,000 HDU) with the nutrients the body uses in its own histamine breakdown: vitamin C, vitamin B6 as P-5-P, copper, zinc, magnesium and the B vitamins B1, B2, B3 and B5, supplemented with SAMe, alpha-ketoglutarate and PQQ. Histamine is a natural amine derivative found in many foods (aged cheese, wine, fermented products, fish, tomatoes) that the body breaks down via DAO in the gut and via HNMT in the cells. People choose this product when they tolerate histamine-rich foods poorly, during the pollen season or when they have a 'histamine-sensitive' constitution. Vitamin C, B6 and copper contribute to the normal function of the immune system; vitamin B6 contributes to normal protein and glycogen metabolism. Seeking Health is the brand of Dr Ben Lynch, known for his work on methylation and genetic variants such as MTHFR. The brand uses only active, body-identical forms of vitamins (such as P-5-P, R-5-P, methylfolate or folinic acid, and methyl-, adenosyl- or hydroxocobalamin), has every batch tested by an independent laboratory and avoids unnecessary excipients, artificial colours and flavours, and common allergens.
How does it differ from the separate DAO capsules and from HistaminX?
Seeking Health DAO enzyme contains only the DAO enzyme (10,000 HDU) in an acid-resistant capsule and is taken just before a histamine-rich meal to break down histamine from the food. HistaminX contains no enzyme but plant compounds (quercetin, luteolin, nettle, rutin) plus vitamin C and works via a different route. Histamine Nutrients sits in between: 15,000 HDU DAO2™ plus the cofactors for the body's own breakdown. Many customers combine them: DAO or Histamine Nutrients with meals, HistaminX daily as a base, and ProBiota HistaminX as a histamine-friendly probiotic.
What exactly is in it?
Per capsule: 100 mg vitamin C, 20 mg thiamine (B1), 10 mg riboflavin as R-5-P, 25 mg niacin (as nicotinic acid), 7 mg vitamin B6 as P-5-P, 10 mg pantothenic acid (B5), 50 mg magnesium (dimagnesium malate, Albion), 5 mg zinc, 0.5 mg copper and 259.1 mg Histamine Nutrients Blend with alpha-ketoglutaric acid, SAMe, LifePQQ® and DAO2™ (porcine kidney extract, 15,000 HDU diamine oxidase activity). Other ingredients: vegetable capsule (hypromellose, water, gellan gum), ascorbyl palmitate, microcrystalline cellulose and silica.
How do I use Histamine Nutrients?
Take 1 to 2 capsules with a meal, as needed: during the day with a histamine-rich meal or in the pollen season, and in the evening with dinner if histamine troubles you at night. The DAO enzyme works in the gut, so take the capsule just before or during the meal, not afterwards. A bottle of 60 capsules lasts 2 months at 1 per day. Do not exceed 2 capsules per day without consulting a professional.
Why does it contain niacin (nicotinic acid) and can that cause a 'flush'?
Niacin as nicotinic acid is a cofactor in histamine breakdown and helps keep the methyl donor SAMe in balance. At a dose of 25 mg, nicotinic acid can cause a temporary warm, red skin (flush) in sensitive people, especially on an empty stomach. This is harmless and disappears within half an hour to an hour; take the capsule with food to prevent it.
Is this product suitable for vegetarians and people with a pork allergy?
No. DAO2™ is obtained from porcine kidney; the product is therefore not suitable for vegetarians, vegans, people who do not eat pork for religious reasons or people with a pork allergy. The capsule itself is plant-based. If you are looking for a plant-based alternative, consider HistaminX (quercetin and plant extracts).
Is it suitable during pregnancy, for children or alongside medication?
During pregnancy and breastfeeding only in consultation with your midwife or doctor. For children only on the advice of a practitioner. If you take antihistamines, MAO inhibitors, antidepressants (because of SAMe) or blood pressure medication, consult your doctor. In bipolar disorder, SAMe is not recommended without medical supervision. A food supplement is not a substitute for a varied diet and a healthy lifestyle. If you take medication, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have a medical condition, consult your doctor or practitioner first.
Does this product contain allergens and how should I store it?
Contains porcine kidney extract (DAO2™). Otherwise free from gluten, dairy, soy, egg, nuts, fish, shellfish and artificial colours and flavours. Store the product tightly closed in a cool, dry and dark place, out of reach of children; refrigeration is not necessary. Best before the date printed on the packaging.
