Home tests for adrenal fatigue

Adrenal fatigue, known in English as adrenal fatigue, is a physical condition in which the body is out of balance due to prolonged stress. The flow, or in other words the ebb and flow, of hormones has changed.

There are three stages of adrenal fatigue, each with its own specific hormonal profile:

Stage 1 - Wired and Tired
Stage 2 - Stressed and Tired
Stage 3 - Full Burnout

When determining adrenal fatigue, it is common to use tests such as the Adrenal Stress Index or the Adrenocortex Stress Profile test. These measure the cortisol rhythm and DHEA using saliva samples.

These expensive laboratory tests are not an option for everyone. Fortunately, there are also two free home tests that can provide some insight.

The pupil contraction test

Normally, the pupils in your eyes maintain a constant contraction when exposed to light. They become smaller and stay small during exposure. With abnormal adrenal function, this contraction is not maintained. The pupils sometimes do not respond at all, contract and then dilate again quickly, or the dilation occurs with a delay.

To perform the test, you need a flashlight. Stand in a dark room in front of a mirror. Shine the light from the flashlight alongside your eye (not directly into it) and observe what happens to the pupil.

The blood pressure test

Normally, blood pressure rises when you stand up from a sitting or lying position. With abnormal adrenal function, the opposite happens: blood pressure then drops (orthostatic hypotension).

To perform the test, you need a digital blood pressure monitor. Put it on and then lie down in a comfortable position. Relax for at least 5 minutes and then measure your blood pressure.

After the first measurement, stand up and measure your blood pressure again in a standing position. Pay special attention to a drop of about 10 mmHg or more in the diastolic reading, the lower number.
