FAQ
Why should I take Beef Tallow and what makes Ancestral Supplements different?

Tallow (suet, the fat around the kidneys) is the purest fat of the animal and was our ancestors' most important source of energy and carrier of fat-soluble vitamins. Ancestral Beef Tallow provides 3,000 mg (6 capsules) of tallow from grass-fed cattle, low-heat rendered from suet, in gelatin capsules and not refined. It is a dietary fat for anyone following a carnivore, ketogenic or high-fat diet, or who wants to take in more fat-soluble vitamins. Ancestral Supplements delivers this fat in capsule form, for anyone who does not like the taste of tallow, cannot get hold of it or does not want to prepare it every day. So it is not an isolated extract or a medicine, but food. The tallow comes from cattle that graze outdoors all year round in New Zealand and Australia: grass-fed and grass-finished, with no added hormones, antibiotics, pesticides or GMOs. The tallow is rendered at low temperature, so the fat-soluble nutrients are preserved as well as possible. There are no fillers, flow agents, stearates or anti-caking agents; the only addition is the bovine gelatin capsule. Every batch is tested by an independent laboratory and the company operates under GMP certification.

What nutrients does Beef Tallow naturally contain?

Per 6 capsules, 3,000 mg of grass-fed beef tallow: roughly 50% saturated fat (stearic and palmitic acid), 40% monounsaturated (oleic acid), CLA, and naturally occurring vitamins A, D, E and K2 in the amounts found in grass-fed beef fat. Levels are not standardised.

How do I take the capsules and how many a day?

The standard dose is 2 capsules with each meal, i.e. 6 capsules a day (3,000 mg). Start with 1 to 2 capsules for the first few days and add one capsule every couple of days until you reach 6, so your body can get used to it. At 6 a day, a jar of 180 capsules lasts 30 days. Because this is food, you can also open the capsules and mix the contents into a smoothie, yoghurt or (not too hot) food.

Can I get a reaction when I start?

Most people notice nothing in particular when they start. Around 5 to 10 percent, especially people with a sensitive immune system or an autoimmune condition, experience mild complaints in the first week such as nausea, headache, fatigue or an unsettled stomach. This is usually temporary. If so, build up more slowly (1 capsule a day, adding one every 3 days), take the capsules with food and a large glass of water, and lower the dose if it persists. If the complaints do not disappear within a few days of lowering the dose, stop and consult your doctor or therapist.

What is the difference compared with Beef Bone Marrow?

Bone Marrow is bone extract with marrow, matrix and cartilage: fat plus minerals, collagen and marrow peptides. Tallow is pure fat, without any bone or organ components, and the most affordable Ancestral product. Choose Tallow if you mainly want the grass-fed fat and the fat-soluble vitamins; choose Bone Marrow for the complete bone profile.

Does Beef Tallow contain liver or cholesterol, and does it fit my diet?

Tallow contains no liver and therefore no vitamin A load from liver. It is an animal fat and so naturally contains cholesterol (around 100 mg per 3 g, comparable to half an egg). It fits perfectly into a ketogenic, carnivore, Paleo or Weston A. Price diet; if you have a fat intolerance or gallbladder problem, start with a lower dose taken with food.

Is this suitable for children, during pregnancy or alongside medication, and can I combine it?

Adults and children can use this product; after all, it is food. For children the dose is adjusted to body weight: a child of 20 to 30 kg, for example, takes 1 to 2 capsules a day (open them into food if you like). During pregnancy and breastfeeding there is no objection; Beef Tallow contains no liver and therefore no vitamin A load from liver, but do consult your midwife. If you take medication or have an autoimmune condition, consult your doctor first. Combining is fine: Ancestral products are food and can be used alongside each other and alongside other supplements. Because Beef Tallow contains no liver, it does not count towards your vitamin A intake from liver.

Does this product contain allergens and how do I store it?

The product contains beef (and bovine gelatin as the capsule) and is therefore not suitable for vegetarians, vegans or people with a beef allergy (alpha-gal). Beyond that it contains no gluten, dairy, soy, nuts, egg, fish, shellfish, sugar, colourings, preservatives or fillers. New Zealand and Australia are officially free of BSE (mad cow disease). Store the jar closed in a cool, dry and dark place, such as a kitchen cupboard; the fridge is not necessary. Close the jar straight after use and leave the silica gel sachet inside. Unopened and sealed, the product keeps until the date on the label; once opened, preferably use it up within 3 months.
