Essential amino acid TryptoPure®

L-tryptophan is one of the eight essential amino acids. Unlike non-essential amino acids, essential amino acids cannot be synthesized in the human body and must therefore be taken either the dietary or the supplementation way. Bodily tryptophan concentrations are the lowest of all twenty amino acids.

L-tryptophan has a precursor function

L-tryptophan plays a role in various metabolic functions throughout the body. It is a precursor to serotonin and melatonin and it can be built into proteins and enzymes. L-Tryptophan has been carefully and extensively researched. Adequate L-tryptophan intake is essential for humans. L-tryptophan is best taken separately from other amino acids and food, for example 2 hours after dinner, before bed.

History

L-Tryptophan was discovered in 1901 by biochemists Hopkins and Cole. They isolated L-tryptophan from casein protein. L-tryptophan was synthesized more regularly from 1949 onwards, but it was not formally released until the 1980s thanks to fermentation-based production methods. Between 1989 and 2001, the sale of L-tryptophan was banned due to contamination of the raw material and the serious health risks involved. Since this ban was lifted, L-tryptophan has been widely marketed and used as a supplement.

Warning when using medication

Are you taking antidepressants with serotonergic effect, hypnotics with a central depressant effect, or certain medicines for the treatment of migraine, and are you considering taking L-tryptophan? Then consult your doctor first. Tryptophan can enhance the effect of antidepressants and of sleeping pills. Do not combine L-tryptophan with any 5-HTP supplement, St. John's wort or Griffonia.
