Cantoni, 1952

The Italian-American biochemist Giulio Cantoni discovered S-adenosylmethionine in 1952. It turned out to be one of the most widely used molecules in the body: it passes methyl groups on to DNA, proteins and signalling substances. SAM-e is formed in the cell from the amino acid methionine and ATP.
