FAQ
What is the Royal Blend gel and why cod liver oil with butter oil?

The Blue Ice™ Royal Blend consists of 2/3 fermented cod liver oil and 1/3 X-Factor™ Gold concentrated butter oil: exactly the ratio Weston A. Price recommended. That way you get the three fat-soluble 'activators' vitamin A, D and K2 together, in their natural food form. Cod liver oil alone contains no K2; butter oil alone no A and D. Those who want both without buying two jars choose the Royal Blend. The gel version is the same blend, bound into a thick, spoonable gel with a little silicon dioxide: it does not run, is easy to dose and irritates the throat less than the thin liquid oil.

Why fermented cod liver oil and not regular cod liver oil or fish oil?

Regular cod liver oil is extracted from the liver with heat and chemicals, then refined, bleached and deodorised; the natural vitamins are lost in the process and synthetic vitamins A and D are often added back. Green Pasture lets the cod livers lacto-ferment for months without heating, following a centuries-old Scandinavian method: the oil is released naturally and retains its natural vitamin A, D and omega-3 (EPA/DHA) in the form in which they occur in the liver. The result is a raw, unprocessed oil with a pronounced taste and smell, but also with its full natural nutritional value. Cod liver oil is one of the few foods that naturally contain vitamin A, vitamin D and the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA together. Vitamin A contributes to normal vision, healthy skin and mucous membranes and the immune system; vitamin D to strong bones and teeth, muscles and the immune system; EPA and DHA to normal heart function and DHA to brain function and vision. Regular fish oil contains only omega-3, no vitamin A and D. That is why people who eat according to the principles of Weston A. Price, GAPS or Paleo, and parents of young children, choose cod liver oil.

How much vitamin A, D and K2 does it contain and is that safe, also during pregnancy?

Green Pasture does not state standardised levels because it is an unprocessed natural product. As a guideline, 2 ml of Royal Blend provides roughly 700 to 1,700 IU vitamin A, 70 to 270 IU vitamin D and a few dozen micrograms of vitamin K2, plus omega-3. That stays well below the European upper limit of 10,000 IU vitamin A per day. Do not combine it with other high-dose vitamin A supplements; a multivitamin is no problem. If you take coumarin-type blood thinners (acenocoumarol, phenprocoumon), consult your doctor because of the vitamin K2. Pregnant? Discuss your total vitamin A intake with your midwife.

How do I use the gel and how much?

Adults take half a teaspoon (2 ml) a day, children from 1 year a quarter teaspoon and babies from 6 months a small lick from the spoon, in consultation with your doctor. Take the gel with a meal; you can take it straight from the spoon, mix it into cold food or follow it with a sip of water or juice. A 188 ml bottle lasts about 3 months at 2 ml a day.

Which flavour should I choose: Natural, Chocolate or Cinnamon?

Natural contains only cod liver oil, butter oil and a little silica: pure and without essential oils, so suitable for babies, for citrus or cinnamon sensitivity and for mixing into food; the fermentation taste is most noticeable here. Chocolate (organic cocoa, vanilla and stevia leaf) is the children's favourite and tastes almost like a thick chocolate spread; Cinnamon (cassia cinnamon oil) masks the fishy taste most strongly for adults. The blend itself is identical in all flavours.

What is the difference from the Royal Blend capsules and from the plain cod liver oil?

Two Royal Blend capsules contain 1,500 mg of blend, slightly less than the 2 ml of gel, and a jar of capsules (2 months) costs more than a bottle of gel (3 months). The gel is therefore cheaper, easier to dose finely for children and contains no beeswax; the capsules are tasteless and handy when travelling. If you want only cod liver oil without butter oil, choose the liquid Blue Ice™ cod liver oil (Natural, Oslo Orange, Cinnamon) or the cod liver oil capsules.

The gel tastes and smells strong: is it rancid? And how do I store it?

No. The strong, sour and 'fishy' taste and smell are characteristic of lacto-fermented cod liver oil and do not mean the oil has gone off; a dark colour or sediment is normal too. Green Pasture has every batch tested by independent laboratories for oxidation (peroxide and anisidine values), heavy metals, PCBs and dioxins, and the results can be found on their website. If the oil has been stored unrefrigerated for months after opening and smells sharply of paint or turpentine, do not use it any more. Unopened, the product keeps until the date on the label at room temperature, away from light. After opening, preferably store the bottle in the fridge and use it within about 3 months. In the fridge the gel becomes firmer; that is normal. Always use a clean, dry spoon and close the bottle tightly.

Does this product contain allergens and is the fish sustainably caught?

The product contains fish (cod liver) and butter oil from cow's milk. The butter oil is centrifuged and contains virtually no milk protein or lactose, but traces cannot be ruled out: with a true cow's milk allergy, choose the plain cod liver oil. No gluten, soy, nuts, egg or shellfish. Yes. The cod is wild-caught in the cold waters around Alaska by an MSC-certified fishery; only the livers are used, a by-product of the fishery for consumption. Green Pasture is a small family business in Nebraska that ferments and bottles the oil itself and is a member of the Weston A. Price Foundation. The butter oil comes from grass-fed cows in the United States.
