FAQ
What is X-Factor™ Gold concentrated butter oil and what is 'Activator X'?

X-Factor™ Gold is butter oil from cows grazing on rapidly growing spring and summer grass. Butter from that grass is exceptionally rich in vitamin K2 (MK-4), the 'Activator X' that Dr. Weston A. Price discovered in the 1930s, plus vitamin A, E, butyric acid, CLA and trace elements. Green Pasture concentrates that butter through an unheated centrifugation process, without additives. Vitamin K2 ensures that the calcium absorbed from food with the help of vitamin D ends up in the right place: in bones and teeth rather than in blood vessels. That is why butter oil complements cod liver oil (vitamins A and D) so well.

Why take butter oil if I already use cod liver oil? And what is the difference from a vitamin K2 capsule?

Cod liver oil provides vitamins A and D, but no K2; without K2, part of the absorbed calcium can end up in soft tissues instead of in the bones. Dr. Price saw the best results with the combination of both: the classic ratio is 2 parts cod liver oil to 1 part butter oil. A synthetic K2 capsule (MK-7 from natto or MK-4 from geraniol) contains one isolated form; butter oil contains natural MK-4 together with vitamin A, E, butyric acid, CLA and trace elements, as in real food. Those who prefer one product choose the Royal Blend (cod liver oil and butter oil).

How do I use the butter oil and how much?

Take 2 capsules a day with a meal; children from about 4 years who can swallow capsules 1 capsule. A jar of 120 capsules lasts 60 days at 2 a day. You can open the capsules and mix the butter oil into food.

What is the difference between the liquid butter oil and the capsules?

Two capsules contain 1,000 mg of butter oil, less than the half teaspoon (over 2,000 mg) from the bottle, and a jar of capsules (2 months) costs more than a bottle (2.5 months). Liquid is therefore cheaper and more potent per dose and easy to mix into food; the capsules are tasteless and handy when travelling. If you want a full dose with capsules, take 4 a day.

How much vitamin K2 does it contain?

Green Pasture does not state a standardised level, because the K2 content depends on the grass the cows graze on and varies by season and batch; nothing is added. Independent analyses of grass-fed butter oil show roughly 10 to 30 µg vitamin K2 (MK-4) per gram, so half a teaspoon easily provides a few dozen micrograms, comparable to a common K2 supplement, plus vitamins A and E.

Can I use butter oil with a cow's milk allergy or lactose intolerance, and with blood thinners?

Centrifugation removes almost all milk proteins and lactose from the butter oil, so most people with lactose intolerance or casein sensitivity tolerate it well. Traces cannot be ruled out, however; with a true cow's milk allergy we advise against it. If you take coumarin-type blood thinners (acenocoumarol, phenprocoumon), consult your doctor, because vitamin K affects their action. With DOACs (rivaroxaban, apixaban) that is not a problem.

How do I store the butter oil and how long does it keep?

Unopened at room temperature away from light until the date on the label; after opening preferably in the fridge and use within 3 months.

Does this product contain additives and where does the butter come from?

The capsules contain concentrated butter oil, thickened with unbleached beeswax, in a plant-based cellulose capsule; nothing else. The butter comes from cows grazing on rapidly growing spring and summer grass in the United States; Green Pasture is a small family business in Nebraska that is a member of the Weston A. Price Foundation. No gluten, soy, nuts, egg or fish.
