A substance from bile
In 1862, the German chemist Adolph Strecker isolated a new substance from pig bile. He named it choline, after the Greek cholē, bile. For a long time, choline was seen as something the body makes in sufficient amounts itself. Only in 1998 did the American Institute of Medicine recognise choline as an essential nutrient, because the body's own production is not always enough.
From egg yolk to lecithin
Most of the choline in the body is found in phospholipids, especially in lecithin. That name comes from the Greek lekithos, egg yolk, in which the substance was first found. When the body breaks down lecithin, alpha-GPC is one of the products formed: choline linked to glycerophosphate. Alpha-GPC is therefore not a foreign substance, but an intermediate step in the body's own metabolism. About 40 percent of its weight is choline.
The first messenger
In 1921, the Austrian pharmacologist Otto Loewi carried out a famous experiment with two frog hearts. He showed that nerves pass on their signals using a chemical substance, which later turned out to be acetylcholine. It was the first neurotransmitter to be discovered. Loewi received the Nobel Prize for it in 1936. The body makes acetylcholine from choline.
Choline and your liver
Choline is also needed in the liver, where it helps to transport fat away. Choline contributes to normal lipid metabolism, to the maintenance of normal liver function and to normal homocysteine metabolism. A capsule with 300 mg of alpha-GPC provides around 120 mg of choline, well above the 82.5 mg needed for these claims.
Function and benefits
Alpha GPC is a form of choline with high bioavailability. In the body, choline is a precursor of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine and is a component of phospholipids, with an important role in our cell membranes. Choline contributes to maintaining the structure of cell membranes and has a positive influence on liver function. Momentous Alpha GPC is made exclusively from pharmaceutical-grade choline. Some effects can be felt quickly, while others become more apparent after a period of consistent use.
NSF Certified for Sport
NSF Certified for Sport is the certification mark recognised by American professional leagues such as the NFL and MLB. Every batch is tested for more than 270 substances that are banned in sport, and it is checked that the product contains what is on the label.
