Daruharidra, the yellow tree
Berberis aristata grows on the mountain slopes of the Himalayas in India and Nepal. In Sanskrit the shrub is called daruharidra, yellow tree, and in English tree turmeric, after the bright yellow wood of its root and stem. In Ayurveda, the root was used to make rasaut, a thickened extract already described in the classical texts. Berberine-rich plants such as goldthread have also been used for centuries in Chinese herbal medicine.
A yellow dye
Berberine is a bright yellow substance. Before synthetic dyes existed, berberine-rich roots were used to dye wool, silk and leather yellow. In laboratories, berberine is still used as a dye because it fluoresces under UV light. The European barberry, found in Dutch gardens and hedges, also contains berberine in its root and bark.
Berbevis Phytosome
Momentous Berberine is formulated as Berbevis, which uses the Phytosome delivery system and offers 9.6 times higher absorption than standard berberine. The patented Berbevis Phytosome delivery system combines Berberis aristata root extract with pea protein, sunflower lecithin, and grape seed extract to enhance absorption and stability. This binds the berberine to phospholipids. The noticeable result is improved bioavailability, better tolerability, and consistent metabolic benefits. Many brands use berberine HCl, which is poorly absorbed and can upset the stomach. The Berbevis formula is gentler on the gut, providing more comfort and better tolerability. The Berberis aristata root is wild-harvested in India.
About berberine
Berberine is a naturally occurring plant alkaloid traditionally extracted from plants such as Berberis aristata, barberry, mahogany, and goldenseal. The use of these plants has a long tradition in various cultures, where their characteristic yellow roots and bark have been used for at least centuries in extracts and herbal preparations. In supplement form, berberine is obtained through standardized extraction processes, ensuring the substance is available in a pure and consistent form. After ingestion, it is further converted into various metabolites. Absorption is a key factor. A major function of berberine is the activation of the enzyme AMPK, a key regulator of cellular energy balance. This influences various aspects of blood sugar regulation and lipid metabolism.
Benefits
Barberry supports the maintenance of normal cholesterol and triglyceride levels*, helps with blood sugar regulation*, is good for the heart and blood vessels* and is good for the liver*. * Health claims pending approval by the European Commission.
