FAQ
Why a separate probiotic for babies and young children?

A baby's gut flora is still developing and is only fully colonised around the third year. In breastfed babies, Bifidobacterium infantis dominates, the strain that digests human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs). That is why the Infant Probiotic Powder consists of 50% B. infantis, complemented with 6 other gentle, histamine-neutral strains, and contains no D-lactate producers, no spore-formers and no prebiotics or additives. Regular children's probiotics often contain L. acidophilus, L. rhamnosus or L. reuteri plus sweeteners and flavours; those are less suitable for sensitive children.

From what age and how do I dose it for a baby?

The powder can be used from birth, preferably in consultation with your health visitor, paediatrician or practitioner. Start with a small part of the scoop (for example a pinch) and build up to 1 level 20 mg scoop (1.45 billion CFU) a day. Mix it with a little expressed breast milk or formula at room temperature, put it on your finger or the nipple, or stir it into cold food such as fruit purée. Never into warm milk or porridge: heat kills the bacteria.

Why does this powder have 'only' 1.45 billion CFU per dose?

With babies and young children it is about building up gently and gradually, not about as many bacteria as possible. A low dose gives less chance of cramps, spitting up or restless bowel movements in the first days. The 15 gram jar contains 750 doses; if you want to go higher (for example for an older child), simply take 2 scoops. If you want more as an adult, choose the Sensitive Probiotic Powder (3 billion per scoop) or the Sensitive capsules.

When is Infant Probiotic particularly useful?

After a caesarean section or with formula feeding (the baby then receives fewer Bifidobacteria), after antibiotics in mother or child, with cramps, hard or loose stools, eczema or sensitive skin, and in children with PANDAS/PANS, autism or GAPS protocols. Pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers also use the powder themselves to support their own flora.

Can my child have a reaction and what do I do then?

In the first days the stools may temporarily change or your child may have a little more wind; that is part of building up the flora. Then go back to a smaller amount and build up more slowly. If your child remains inconsolable, develops a fever or the diarrhoea persists, stop and consult the doctor. The formula contains no histamine-producing or D-lactate-forming strains, so reactions are rare.

Can I combine it with antibiotics or with other Smidge products?

Yes. During a course of antibiotics, give the powder at least 2 hours after the antibiotic and after the course use it to rebuild the flora. In children with a yeast problem it can be combined with YeastBiotic (S. boulardii); discuss the dose with your practitioner. Adults moving to a higher dose choose the Sensitive Probiotic Powder or the Sensitive capsules.

How do I store the powder?

In the fridge, tightly closed, with a dry spoon: that way the number of live bacteria stays up to the expiry date. On holiday the powder remains usable for a few weeks at room temperature, provided it is kept out of the sun and away from heat.

Does this product contain allergens or additives?

No. The Infant Probiotic Powder contains only the 7 freeze-dried bacterial cultures, grown dairy- and soy-free. No dairy, casein, lactose, gluten, soy, egg, nuts, corn, yeast, prebiotics, sweeteners, flavours or colours. It is vegan and non-GMO.
