In addition to a healthy diet, proper digestion of your diet is vitally important, so that the nutrients present in it can be optimally absorbed by your body. In order for digestion to run smoothly, the stomach produces stomach acid and various enzymes that aid in the digestion of carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Smidge™ HCl+ Enzymes combines a wide selection of enzymes with betaine hydrochloride (HCl), the hydrochloride salt form of the betaine enzyme. Smidge™ HCl + Enzymes is a unique supplement owing to the fact that it combines a mild dose of HCl with pepsin, rendering the product suitable for people with low stomach acid production as well.

Smidge™ HCl + Enzymes in a nutshell

This unique formula combines a mild dose of HCl with pepsin and three different types of the enzyme lipase, namely amylase, lactase and phytase. This formula is particularly suitable for people transitioning to a GAPS or Paleo diet, both of which are diets with a higher than usual fat content. This product is also popular among people with stomach and reflux complaints, complaints often caused by food that has not been digested properly and flows back into the esophagus. Restoring the enzyme balance in the stomach acid is important. Beyond HCl, Smidge™ HCl+ Enzymes contains three types of lipase, pepsin, lactase, amylase and phytase as well as the protease peptidase complex with exopeptidase and DPP-IV activity. In addition, this supplement is free from traces of milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, nuts, peanuts, gluten, soy, yeast and corn, and contains no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives. The powder cannot be separated from the capsule and the product cannot be used on an empty stomach. This supplement is not suitable for children, nor for people with a stomach ulcer or an Aspergillus allergy.

The intestinal flora is a single name for all micro-organisms living in the intestine. That's about 100 trillion in total! The body acts as a host for these microbes. What do I use Smidge™ HCl + Enzymes for?

For people with low stomach acid production (hypochlorhydria). Too little stomach acid means proteins are poorly broken down, minerals such as iron, zinc, magnesium and vitamin B12 are poorly absorbed and the stomach empties slowly, which actually causes reflux, belching, a full feeling and gas. Each capsule contains 400 mg betaine hydrochloride and 8 mg pepsin, complemented with 494 mg enzymes (three types of lipase, amylase, lactase, phytase and a protease/peptidase complex with DPP-IV activity).

How do I know whether I have too little stomach acid?

Typical signs are a full or heavy feeling immediately after eating, belching, heartburn despite (or because of) acid blockers, undigested food residues in the stool, brittle nails, thinning hair, iron or B12 deficiency and a lot of gas. Stomach acid production declines with age, with stress and with long-term use of acid blockers. A simple self-test: take 1 capsule with a protein-rich meal. If you feel nothing, there is probably too little acid; if you feel warmth or a burning sensation, your stomach acid is fine and Smidge™ Digestive Enzymes (without HCl) suits you better.

How do I build up the dose?

Start with 1 capsule at the beginning of a full, protein-rich meal (not with a snack or fruit only). If you feel no warmth or burning, take 2 capsules with the next meal, and build up further if necessary until you feel a slight warmth in the stomach; then go back one capsule: that is your dose. Most people end up at 1 to 3 capsules per main meal. As your own stomach acid production recovers, you often need less and less. A jar of 120 capsules lasts 20 days at 2 capsules per meal.

When should I NOT use HCl + Enzymes?

Do not use with a stomach or intestinal ulcer, gastritis, an inflamed oesophagus (oesophagitis) or when using NSAIDs (ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac), aspirin or corticosteroids, because extra acid can then damage the stomach lining. If you use acid blockers (omeprazole, pantoprazole, ranitidine), consult your doctor before starting: HCl and acid blockers work against each other. Also during pregnancy, breastfeeding and in children only in consultation with a doctor or practitioner.

What is the difference from Smidge™ Digestive Enzymes?

Digestive Enzymes contains 10 enzymes but no HCl and pepsin, and is intended for those who have enough stomach acid or are not allowed to use acid. HCl + Enzymes supplements stomach acid and provides enzymes, and is the choice with a proven or suspected stomach acid deficiency. Both contain the DPP-IV complex that breaks down gluten and casein fragments. Many customers use HCl + Enzymes with meat- and fish-rich main meals and Digestive Enzymes with lighter meals.

I have reflux: won't HCl make it worse?

That seems contradictory, but reflux often arises precisely from too little stomach acid: the stomach empties slowly, food ferments, pressure rises and the sphincter opens. Many people with reflux therefore notice improvement with HCl. If you feel a burning sensation immediately with 1 capsule, your reflux is probably not related to acid deficiency; then stop and choose Digestive Enzymes. Always consult a doctor with severe or persistent reflux complaints.

Can I combine HCl + Enzymes with probiotics, Atrantil or with SIBO and GAPS?

Yes. Sufficient stomach acid is actually one of the most important protections against SIBO, because it kills bacteria from food before they reach the small intestine; HCl + Enzymes therefore fits well alongside Atrantil and in GAPS and Paleo protocols. Preferably take probiotics with a different meal or at least half an hour later, so that the extra acid does not affect the bacteria.

Does this product contain allergens or additives, and is it vegan?

Betaine HCl is obtained from sugar beet and pepsin is of animal (porcine) origin; the product is therefore not vegan, but it is free from dairy, gluten, soy, egg, nuts, corn, yeast and colours, fragrances or flavours. Only cellulose and a plant-based HPMC capsule are added. Store in a dry place at room temperature.
