FAQ
What is folinic acid and how does it differ from folic acid and methylfolate?

Folinic acid (5-formyltetrahydrofolate, as calcium folinate) is a natural, directly usable form of folate (vitamin B9/B11). Ordinary folic acid is synthetic and has to be converted in the body in several steps, which in many people (certainly those with an MTHFR variant) proceeds slowly and can leave unmetabolised folic acid in the blood. Methylfolate (5-MTHF) is the end form, but carries a methyl group and is not always well tolerated by 'methyl-sensitive' people. Folinic acid sits in between: already active, no conversion via the enzyme DHFR needed, and methyl-free, so the body itself decides how much to convert to methylfolate. Folate contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, normal blood formation, normal psychological function and normal homocysteine metabolism. Seeking Health is the brand of Dr Ben Lynch, known for his work on methylation and genetic variants such as MTHFR. The brand uses only active, body-identical forms of vitamins (such as P-5-P, R-5-P, methylfolate or folinic acid, and methyl-, adenosyl- or hydroxocobalamin), has every batch tested by an independent laboratory and avoids unnecessary excipients, artificial colours and flavours, and common allergens.

Who is folinic acid mainly intended for?

For people who react to methylfolate or a methylated B complex with restlessness, headache, irritability or poor sleep; for people with an MTHFR, SLC19A1 or other folate-related variant who want a methyl-free form; for those who convert folic acid poorly; and as a supplement alongside B-Minus (the B complex without folate and B12) or Multivitamin One MF. Parents who give folate to children on the advice of a practitioner also often choose this lozenge, because it is easy to break.

What is in it and how much folate is 800 µg?

Per lozenge 800 µg folate as calcium folinate (400% of the reference intake). Other ingredients: xylitol, ascorbyl palmitate, natural cherry flavour and silica. No sugar, no artificial colours or flavours. 800 µg is a targeted dose, twice the reference intake of 400 µg; if you want less, break the tablet into halves or quarters.

How do I use the lozenges?

Start the first week with half a lozenge; let it dissolve slowly in the mouth and then swallow. If you need more support, move up to 1 whole tablet per day, preferably in the morning with breakfast. Do not take it within 5 hours of going to bed: active B vitamins can have a mildly stimulating effect and may make it harder for sensitive people to fall asleep. A box of 60 tablets lasts 2 months at 1 per day.

Can I combine folinic acid with vitamin B12 and other B vitamins?

Yes, this is actually recommended: folate and vitamin B12 work closely together in methylation, and a high folate intake without sufficient B12 can mask a B12 deficiency. Seeking Health therefore often combines Folinic Acid with Hydroxo-Adeno B12 (methyl-free) and B-Minus as a methyl-free base; those who tolerate methyl forms well choose Methyl B12 with L-Methylfolate or B Complex Plus. Do not combine with a second folate product without checking the total dose.

Can I react to this product?

Folinic acid is generally tolerated much better than methylfolate, but it is still an active folate: occasionally someone notices some restlessness, headache or feeling wired at the start. Therefore start with half a tablet and take it in the morning. Xylitol can have a laxative effect in larger amounts; the amount per tablet is small. Keep products containing xylitol out of reach of dogs.

Is it suitable during pregnancy, for children or alongside medication?

Folate is particularly important around pregnancy: supplemental folic acid contributes to maternal tissue growth during pregnancy. Folinic acid is a well-tolerated form for this, but always discuss the dose (800 µg) and the combination with a prenatal multivitamin with your midwife. For children from 4 years on the advice of a practitioner, usually a quarter to half a tablet. If you take methotrexate, anti-epileptic drugs or other folate antagonists, consult your doctor first. A food supplement is not a substitute for a varied diet and a healthy lifestyle. If you take medication, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have a medical condition, consult your doctor or practitioner first.

Does this product contain allergens and how should I store it?

Free from gluten, dairy, soy, egg, nuts, fish, shellfish, sugar and artificial colours; suitable for vegetarians and vegans. Store the product tightly closed in a cool, dry and dark place, out of reach of children; refrigeration is not necessary. Best before the date printed on the packaging.
