What exactly is Vitamin B12?

Vitamin B12 is a general term for a group of essential bioactive molecules known as cobalamines. The name cobalamin is a combination of the words cobalt and vitamin. Vitamin B12 can exist as cyanocobalamin, methylcobalamin, adenosylcobalamin and hydroxycobalamin. Vitamin B12 is used by every cell in the body and is therefore generally applicable.

Active forms of B12

Methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin are the two most bioavailable forms of B12 because they can be used directly by the body. Cyanocobalamin, the most common form in supplements, for example needs to be converted in the liver first.
