Deuterium seems to be a missing link in the health puzzle. In Western populations, the deuterium load is so high that this should become an important focus for anti-aging and healthcare strategies.

Deuterium (D or 2H) is a simple element consisting of a proton, a neutron, and an electron. It is a molecular variant (an isotope) of hydrogen, but with twice the mass. The effects of deuterium’s extra mass in chemical reactions differ from those of hydrogen, including in the body, where the deuterium content has a range of metabolic consequences. The simplest way to influence the deuterium content of your body is to lower the deuterium concentration of drinking water by using deuterium-depleted water.

Water

Water is one of the most active biological compounds there is, and it influences nearly all biochemical and biophysical processes in the body. Water is even the most abundant molecule in cells, accounting for 70% or more of total cell mass. (The amount of water covering the Earth’s total surface is, coincidentally or not, also about 70%.) Interactions between water and the other molecular components of cells are therefore crucial to your biochemistry.

Water is not only H2O

At first glance, water seems to be one of the simplest and most abundant substances, but besides H2O it also includes, among others, D (deuterium), H3O+ (hydronium), and OH- (hydroxide). These are partly responsible for many of water’s unusual properties. In addition, water naturally contains inorganic salts measured in the unit Total Dissolved Solids (TDS). This mainly includes calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, bicarbonates, chlorides, and sulfates.

Hydrogen

Hydrogen is the most common element on Earth, and it occurs even more often than oxygen or carbon. It is essential for life. You can find hydrogen in the air we breathe, the food we eat, and the water we drink. The hydrogen atoms we take into our bodies become part of blood, organs, DNA, and everything else we are made of.

Deuterium

Deuterium is a rare type of hydrogen that, like ordinary hydrogen, becomes part of our bodies. Deuterium contains an extra neutron, which doubles its mass compared with ordinary hydrogen, and as in water, an excess of deuterium changes the chemistry of the “ingredients” that make up our bodies. Deuterium is found in air, food, and water. The amount of deuterium is expressed in parts per million (PPM), and despite these seemingly small amounts, its influence on body function is significant.

Biological importance

When we take into account the very high concentrations of water in biological systems, it becomes difficult to ignore the relative amounts of “deuterated” water and deuterons. Deuterium concentrations in the human body are several times higher than levels of other physiologically essential elements such as calcium, potassium, or magnesium. By comparison, your blood contains six times more deuterium than calcium and ten times more deuterium than magnesium. The health effects of calcium and magnesium are already widely known and documented, even though they are present in lower amounts in the blood. Deuterium is therefore something you should also take into account.

Deuterium in food

Plants remove deuterium by storing it in their sugars. That is why carbohydrate- or sugar-rich products such as fruit, potatoes, and grains are high in deuterium. Processed foods from the food industry also often have a high deuterium content. Natural foods rich in fat, such as grass-fed dairy, meat, nuts, and plant oils, have a low deuterium content. Vegetables also have a low deuterium content.

Eating tropical fruits is not recommended during a deuterium depletion protocol because deuterium concentrations in food products near the equator are higher. Fruits and vegetables grown within your own climate zone are allowed, however.

The discovery of deuterium’s role

Dr. Gábor Somlyai, a molecular biologist from Hungary, was the first in the early 1990s to recognize the biological importance of deuterium, especially the fact that it can replace hydrogen atoms with undesirable consequences in mammalian cells. Deuterium depletion brings about positive changes in metabolism and gene expression.

László G. Boros, professor at UCLA, has conducted fundamental biochemical research into deuterium depletion as a natural tool in the field of health and healthy aging. The role of deuterium and, related to that, the optimization of mitochondrial function, has gained broader recognition through Professor Boros.

Through the submolecular cellular actions driven by deuterium, both scientists have been able to answer many outstanding questions in the field of health and create a new research direction centered on deuterium depletion. According to them, a changed deuterium level is a very important submolecular and biological phenomenon and a key mechanism in biology.

Deuterium in mitochondria

The mitochondria in your cells play a central role in your energy metabolism, which in turn plays a central role in overall health. Each mitochondrion has hundreds of nanomotors that extract energy from the food you eat. Hydrogen ions drive these nanomotors, which together enable ATP synthesis. As a hydrogen variant, deuterium also affects the nanomotors, but negatively. Deuterium does not drive the motors; instead, it causes them to break down. As a result, energy demand and supply become unbalanced.

Mitochondria produce water

The body draws from two water sources: (1) the water you drink, and (2) the water your mitochondria produce from the food you eat. You probably did not know that your body can produce water itself, but this is scientifically established. The deuterium content in your body is therefore a mixture of drinking water and water from the mitochondria. However, the different water sources have different deuterium levels. Drinking water and products that contain drinking water, such as soft drinks, usually have a high deuterium content.

How can you use Preventa deuterium-depleted water?

Replace your normal daily water intake with deuterium-depleted water. This is typically about 1.5 to 2 liters. In this way, intake of normal, non-deuterium-depleted water can be limited to a minimum.

Does using Preventa products have side effects?

Based on available data and experience, the use of deuterium-depleted water can be considered safe. No side effects are known.

Can you cook with deuterium-depleted water?

Yes, but with a lid on the pan. You can use it to make hot drinks or cook food without any problems.

Can opened deuterium-depleted water be stored?

It is not advisable to leave Preventa uncovered for a long period of time (i.e. several hours), because the deuterium concentration may then increase. Drink the water shortly after pouring it and tighten the bottle cap properly.

Is there a usage protocol for Preventa deuterium-depleted water?

For healthy people, it is suggested to use a course of the 125 ppm variant once a year for 2 to 3 months. For specific indications, it is recommended to use Preventa deuterium-depleted water for longer periods, possibly in different strengths.
