Product Description

KetoCaNa: New Sugar-Free Energy Drink

In late 2010 a University of Florida professor wanted to know whether it was possible to produce the ketone body "beta-hydroxybutyrate" (BHB) for use in research. He sent a request to Patrick Arnold of Prototype Nutrition.

You may have heard the name before—Arnold was the first to introduce androstenedione, 1-androstenediol and methylhexanamine (geranamine) as dietary supplements. He is accordingly, and appropriately, known as the father of prohormones.

Being an organic chemist, Arnold managed to organize production, thus freeing the way toward groundbreaking and very interesting experiments with exogenous ketones. The results impressed even Arnold and as a supplement entrepreneur he saw possibilities right away. After all, boosting ketone levels can greatly affect both physical and mental performance and overall functioning of the body.

The production rate proved the biggest drawback. Manufacture of the initial batch of ketone bodies was so expensive as to prohibit their marketing as a food supplement. This problem was overcome when Arnold proved able to design an alternative production process. Of the two main forms acetoacetate (AcAc) and beta-hydroxybutyric acid (BHB), the former soon dropped out as it proved highly unstable. With BHB, however, Arnold saw potential as a salt form.

The outcome of Arnold’s research and production tests was a mixed sodium and potassium beta-hydroxybutyric acid salt: KetoCaNa. Sodium and potassium were chosen to maintain mineral balance when taking high amounts of ketone-bodies. KetoCaNa makes for a supplement that causes serum levels of ketones to rise sharply. As ketones are supplied from external sources, a ketogenic diet is no longer required. Ketones in the blood will always rise, even if you have just finished a plate of spaghetti!

Ketone Bodies

Ketone bodies are a natural source of energy for the body. These compounds are endogenously produced and used up during exceptional metabolic conditions. Fasting is one example, as are high-fat and low carbohydrate diets, also known as a ketogenic diet. Ketones are the end-products of fatty acid metabolism and, calorie-wise, the body’s main energy supplier.

Ketones are really a super-fuel for the body. Unlike glucose, ketones do not require insulin for being incorporated into cells. Once inside the cell they generate ATP as a part of metabolic cycles. Ketones cannot be converted to body fat and, in contrast to most other fats, they can freely cross the blood-brain barrier.

Ketones are therefore a superior energy source when it comes to brain cells. Ketones supply more ATP per oxygen unit than do other energy sources.

Directly into ketosis

KetoCaNa contains endogenous beta-hydroxybutyrate ketone bodies (BHB) in sodium and potassium salt forms. Taking KetoCaNa one hour before exercise reduces oxygen consumption at each power output. In other words, equal amounts of output can be generated during workouts or competitions but with the use of less oxygen.

KetoForce increases blood levels of BHB ketones and AcAc for 2.5 to 3 hours after ingestion.

This means greater efficiency. KetoCaNa is ideal not just for (endurance) athletes and high-output professionals such as Navy SEALs, but really anyone from busy desk warriors to all those pursuing a ketogenic lifestyle.

A much-discussed 2015 article entitled "Ketones: Controversial New Energy Drink Could Be Next Big Thing in Cycling," discussed a new, highly expensive keto-energy drink developed at Oxford University. Professional cyclists subsequently began using this direct source of ketones during training and competition as ergogenic (performance-enhancing) agent.

Insiders agreed this is the "next big thing" in cycling—despite the bitter taste and per-liter cost of more than € 2,500 (!). Cyclists have been using keto energy drinks with great success. But don’t worry: exogenous ketones are not banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
