FAQ
What is Atrantil Pro and how does it differ from regular Atrantil?

Atrantil Pro combines the patented Atrantil blend of quebracho, horse chestnut and peppermint extract with MegaTrio, three spore-forming probiotics: Bacillus subtilis HU58, Bacillus coagulans SC-208 and Bacillus clausii SC-109 (3 billion per daily dose). Regular Atrantil contains only the plant extracts and is aimed at reducing gas and bloating originating in the small intestine. Atrantil Pro does that too, but the Bacillus strains convert the large polyphenols from quebracho into smaller, better absorbable substances such as urolithins and then support the recovery of a healthy gut flora. This makes Atrantil Pro the more complete product for those who want to both 'clear out' and rebuild.

When should I choose Atrantil Pro and when regular Atrantil?

Choose regular Atrantil if you have acute complaints of gas, a bloated belly or sluggish bowels and first want to tackle the overgrowth in the small intestine, or if you have reacted badly to probiotics in the past. Choose Atrantil Pro if your complaints keep coming back, if you want to rebuild the gut flora after a course of Atrantil or antibiotics, or if you want one product for daily maintenance of a calm belly and a healthy gut flora. Many customers start with 1 or 2 bottles of Atrantil and then switch to Atrantil Pro as maintenance.

Why spore-forming probiotics and not regular Lactobacillus or Bifidobacterium probiotics?

Bacillus bacteria sit in a protective spore that survives stomach acid, bile and heat, so they arrive alive in the small and large intestine and can also be stored outside the fridge. Regular lactic acid bacteria often only partly survive the stomach and can actually worsen complaints with an overgrowth in the small intestine. Spore-formers do not: they only become active in the gut, help displace unwanted micro-organisms and stimulate the growth of your own good bacteria. That is why this combination with the polyphenols from Atrantil makes so much sense.

How do I use Atrantil Pro?

Take 2 capsules with every meal (6 a day) for at least 2 to 4 weeks, always with food. Once the complaints have decreased, you can go back to a maintenance dose of 1 capsule with every meal (3 a day). A bottle of 90 capsules lasts 15 days at the loading dose and 30 days at maintenance. If you are sensitive to probiotics, start with 1 capsule per meal and build up over a week.

Can I combine Atrantil Pro with regular Atrantil, other probiotics or antibiotics?

Atrantil Pro already contains the full Atrantil blend, so you do not need to take regular Atrantil alongside it. Other probiotics are in principle not necessary; if you still want to use them, add them only once the bloating complaints have disappeared. The Bacillus strains are insensitive to most antibiotics, so Atrantil Pro can also be used during and after a course of for example rifaximin to help prevent relapse; discuss this with your practitioner. Digestive enzymes, betaine HCl, magnesium and fibre can be combined without any problem.

Does Atrantil Pro have side effects?

Atrantil Pro is generally well tolerated. In the first few days a temporary 'die-off' reaction may occur as the micro-organisms in the small intestine die off and the gut flora shifts: slightly more gas, cramps, changed bowel movements, headache or fatigue. This usually disappears within a few days. Build up more slowly if the reaction is strong and drink plenty of water. Always take the capsules with a meal to avoid stomach upset.

Can I use Atrantil Pro during pregnancy, breastfeeding, with medication or with a weakened immune system?

Atrantil Pro has not been studied in pregnant women, during breastfeeding or in children under 12; in those cases use it only in consultation with a doctor. Horse chestnut extract contains aescin with a mild blood-thinning effect: consult your doctor or pharmacist if you take anticoagulants. People with a severely weakened immune system, a central venous catheter or acute pancreatitis should always consult their doctor before using probiotics.

Does Atrantil Pro contain allergens, is it suitable for vegetarians and vegans, and how do I store it?

Atrantil Pro contains no gluten, soy, dairy, nuts, artificial colours or flavours and is non-GMO. Horse chestnut is botanically not a nut; with a known allergy to horse chestnut or latex, consult your doctor. The capsule is made of plant-based hypromellose, making the product suitable for vegetarians and vegans. Thanks to the spore form, the probiotics do not need refrigeration: store the bottle in a cool, dry, dark place and use it before the date on the label. The capsules may be opened and mixed into cold food; avoid hot food or drinks.
