Momentous at Ergomax: A Glimpse Behind the Label

Anyone considering and exploring dietary supplements should be able to trust that the contents match the label. In the supplement world, that is not always a given. Claims are sometimes stronger than the underlying evidence, and ingredients are not always fully specified. In addition, quality controls differ substantially from one brand to another.

Momentous takes a different approach. Recommended by Dr. Andrew Huberman, the brand builds its quality policy around three robust pillars: science, raw materials and independent certification. Scientifically grounded formulas

Momentous works from science, not trends. When formulating supplements, the brand works with, among others, sports dietitians, researchers and experts in human performance. The starting point is that formulas must serve a concrete purpose and be based on the available scientific knowledge.

That does not mean that every supplement is automatically necessary for everyone. But it does reveal a clear way of working: not starting from a long list of ingredients, but from the question of which nutrients are relevant and in what quantity.

No proprietary blends

An important part of transparency is the absence of so-called proprietary blends. In such an often proprietary “own blend,” several ingredients are sometimes listed under a single collective name, without showing the exact dosage of each ingredient. Herbal blends are, of course, not always a drawback. Many New Chapter products, for example, contain such blends, with a clear indication of which ingredients they contain.

Momentous instead lists each ingredient separately, making it possible to assess as clearly as possible what a product contains and how the formula relates to its intended use. For consumers, this also makes comparisons with other products and research easier.

Selective sourcing of raw materials

According to Momentous, product quality begins with the origin of the ingredients. The brand therefore looks not only at the final formula, but first and foremost at suppliers and production methods.

For Omega 3, for example, Momentous works with a single sustainable Norwegian fishery. The small fish species used, including anchovies, sardines and mackerel, are lower in the food chain and therefore generally contain fewer heavy metals than larger predatory fish. The fish oil is processed with attention to oxidation and is also tested by IFOS, a specialized organization for assessing fish oil.

Momentous has also had its own specification developed for creatine. The emphasis is not only on purity, but also on the mixability of the final product. For dairy products, the brand works with Irish dairy farmers. According to Momentous, the aim is to know the supply chain as well as possible, rather than purchasing a raw material solely on the basis of price.

Independent quality controls

According to information from the brand, all Momentous products are independently tested and certified by NSF Certified for Sport® or Informed Sport™. These two programs screen supplements for prohibited substances and verify whether the contents match the product information.

NSF (founded in 1944 as the National Sanitation Foundation) is an independent, U.S.-accredited nongovernmental organization whose global mission is to protect and improve human health worldwide.

NSF Certified for Sport® tests, among other things, for hundreds of substances considered undesirable by major sports organizations. In addition to the product itself, NSF also includes individual steps in the production process and the production facility in its assessment. You can look up these substances yourself in its online search system (Certified Products Search).

Momentous also describes additional testing by LightLabs, an independent laboratory in Austin, Texas. The packaged finished product is checked for, among other things, label accuracy, heavy metals, PFAS, microplastics and bacterial contamination.

The brand says it spends up to 2 percent of revenue on independent post-production testing. If a production batch does not meet the stated requirements, it is not sold. That is a stricter choice than relying solely on raw-material checks or documents from the manufacturer.

Momentous also mentions the introduction of SuppCo TESTED. Products are purchased in the same way a consumer would buy them and are then tested again for quality. The checks therefore go beyond samples supplied directly by the manufacturer.

NEW: The Signature Spec™ quality label

Signature Spec™ is a new designation for products for which Momentous says it has gone beyond customary industry standards. It is therefore not a completely separate quality system, but an additional designation within the existing Momentous Standard®.

The first example is Momentous Creatine. Rather than simply adopting an existing raw-material specification, the brand had its own specification developed for this product. The product is focused on high purity, good mixability and additional testing that, as explained above, goes beyond the checks customary in the industry.

The name Signature Spec™ therefore mainly means that Momentous has established additional requirements for a particular product. The designation does not replace the existing certifications. NSF Certified for Sport® or Informed Sport™ continue to relate to independent product testing and the absence of prohibited substances.
