The Microbiome: Why Your Gut Flora is the Foundation of Your Vitality

We hear it more and more often: good health starts in the gut. But what does that actually mean in concrete terms? During a walk in the forest with Yoran Hensel, an expert in clinical psychoneuroimmunology, we delved deep into the world of the microbiome. Did you know that you carry no less than 1.5 kilograms of bacteria with you?

In our latest video, Yoran explains that we have more bacteria in our guts than cells in our entire body. These "subtenants" are not just present; they form a complex ecosystem that is essential for how you feel, both physically and mentally.

A village in your gut

Yoran compares the microbiome to a village. "In every village, you have good citizens and citizens who keep things a bit edgy," he explains. It's all about balance. The good bacteria help you digest food and convert substances into usable vitamins and minerals. When the balance tips to the 'bad' side, you immediately notice it in your energy levels and resistance.

The 3 pillars for a healthy microbiome

How do you keep this internal ecosystem in top condition? Yoran shares three crucial insights:

1. Variety is key

A monotonous diet leads to a monotonous microbiome. The golden rule? Try to eat 20 to 30 different types of plants, herbs, and vegetables weekly. "Your microbiome really thrives on variety," says Yoran. Also consider fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kimchi, or kefir to add live bacteria to your system.

2. Rest to digest

You can eat as healthily as you want, but if you are constantly in 'fight-or-flight' mode due to stress, your digestion is on a back burner. Your body then prioritizes survival, not digestion. True relaxation is therefore not only good for your mind but an absolute prerequisite for a functioning microbiome.

3. The role of supplements: Pre- vs. Probiotics

When diet alone is not enough, supplements can provide support. But what's the difference?

  • Prebiotics: This is the food for your bacteria (think specific fibers).
  • Probiotics: These are the bacteria themselves.

Yoran emphasizes that everyone is unique. It often pays to specifically look at which strains you need, for example, through a stool test.

Conclusion

Your microbiome is your personal ally in your pursuit of vitality. By focusing on unprocessed food, immense variety, and sufficient rest, you lay the foundation for a healthy and energetic life.
