Immune System Supplements

The immune system is a complex network of cells, organs, proteins and antibodies. The Latin term immunis means exempt. Around 70% of immune cells are located in the gut.

For ten vitamins and minerals there is an authorised claim relating to the normal function of the immune system. On this page you can read which ones these are and which threshold applies.

Why it starts in your gut

Your gut wall is the largest place where your body is in contact with the outside world. Everything you eat and drink passes through it, which is why roughly 70% of your immune cells are located there. It is no coincidence that people who are focused on their immune defences sooner or later end up looking at their digestion.

That also explains why, alongside vitamins and minerals, you will find probiotics and fermented products in this collection. Looking back generations, you see the same thing: sauerkraut, kefir, fermented vegetables and bone broth were on the table in almost every traditional kitchen, long before anyone used the word microbiome.

Two systems, one defence

Your defences consist of two parts that complement each other. The innate part is the fast one: fixed responses that kick in immediately, without your body needing to know the intruder. The adaptive part is the learning one: it builds up through exposure and remembers what it has encountered before.

The word immune comes from the Latin immunis, exempt. In Roman times it referred to those who were exempt from taxes or military service. That it is now the word for your defence system says something about how people have always viewed it: as something that exempts you from what affects others.

The sun, winter and vitamin D

Vitamin D is the only vitamin your body makes itself, in the skin, under the influence of UVB from sunlight. At the latitude of the Netherlands, the sun is too low in the sky between October and March to get that production going. That is why demand for vitamin D peaks in precisely those months.

You will come across two forms on labels. D3 or cholecalciferol is the form that is also produced in your skin and found in animal sources, such as cod liver oil. D2 or ergocalciferol comes from yeast and mushrooms. Because vitamin D is fat-soluble, it usually comes in a softgel with oil and you take it with a meal containing some fat.

Finding your way through 166 products

This is the largest collection in the webshop, and it is made up of four areas. The vitamins and minerals, of which vitamins A, C, D, B6, B12, folate, zinc, selenium, copper and iron are chosen most often. The botanicals such as olive leaf, oregano and elderberry.

Then there are the probiotics and fermented products, and the organ extracts such as thymus and bone marrow, from the nose-to-tail tradition in which the organs were considered the most valuable part of the animal. If you know which substance you are looking for, those categories will get you where you want to be faster.

Frequently asked questions about the immune system

Which vitamins and minerals may carry an immune claim? +

In the European register of health claims, the wording about the normal function of the immune system is listed for vitamins A, C, D, B6, B12 and folate, and for the minerals zinc, selenium, copper and iron. A serving must provide at least 15% of the daily reference intake.

What does the 15% RI threshold mean? +

A product may only carry a claim about a vitamin or mineral if a serving provides at least fifteen per cent of the daily reference intake. The label states this percentage per dose.

What is the difference between the innate and the adaptive immune system? +

The innate part works with pre-programmed responses and springs into action immediately. The adaptive part develops through exposure to pathogens and remembers what it has encountered before.

Is the immune system connected to the gut? +

Yes. About 70% of the cells that make up the immune system are located in the gut. The gut wall is the largest area where the body is in contact with the outside world.

When do people often choose these supplements? +

Many people use these supplements when they want to pay extra attention to their diet, for example during changes of season or busy periods. They are usually taken as part of a daily routine.

Can supplements replace a healthy lifestyle? +

No. Food supplements are intended to complement a varied diet and a healthy lifestyle. They do not replace a balanced diet, sufficient sleep, exercise and other daily habits.

The Immune System and the Body

Daily habits play an important role in a healthy lifestyle. Adequate sleep, regular physical activity, a varied diet, and stress management are often mentioned as key components of a balanced lifestyle. General hygiene and avoiding smoking are also part of this.

Nutrition and Nutrients

Nutrition provides various nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, and proteins. These nutrients are part of a varied diet. In supplement formulations, ingredients such as fatty acids, botanical extracts, and selected minerals are commonly used.
