Eye Supplements

Together with the brain, the eyes form the visual system. They capture light and pass it on as signals to the brain, where it is processed into perceptions.

For vitamin A, vitamin B2, zinc and DHA there is an authorised claim relating to the maintenance of normal vision. In addition, you will find carotenoids such as lutein and zeaxanthin here.

The yellow filter in your eye

In the centre of your retina lies the macula, the yellow spot, the area with which you see sharply. It owes its colour to two carotenoids: lutein and zeaxanthin. The same pigment family that makes carrots orange and salmon pink, stored in precisely the spot where light enters most intensely.

Your body does not make them itself. They come from dark green leafy vegetables, maize and egg yolk, and because they are fat-soluble substances, they are better absorbed with a meal containing some fat. In that respect, spinach with a dash of olive oil is no coincidence but a good combination.

Lutein and zeaxanthin

These are two carotenoids, the same family as beta-carotene and astaxanthin. They occur naturally in dark green leafy vegetables, maize and egg yolk, and they are fat-soluble. In the eye they are found in the yellow spot, the macula, which owes its colour to them.

For lutein and zeaxanthin there are no authorised health claims. We therefore describe what the substances are and where they occur. Because they are fat-soluble, they are usually taken with a meal containing some fat.

Eyes, brain and light

Seeing is the result of teamwork: the eyes capture light and send it as signals via the optic nerve to the brain, where it is processed into perceptions. To be able to see, the brain is therefore just as important as the eyes themselves.

The eyes also play a role in the day-night rhythm: light falling on the retina is the signal the biological clock runs on. You can read more about that connection under Rest and sleep. Breaks during screen work and sufficient daylight are often mentioned in connection with visual comfort.

The Role of the Eyes and the Visual System

The eyes, together with the brain, form the visual system, which allows light and visual information from the environment to be perceived and processed. They play an important role in daily activities such as reading, working, and perceiving contrast and colors. In addition, the eyes are often mentioned in relation to the circadian rhythm and how the body responds to light.

Eyes and Daily Habits

Visual comfort can be influenced by various daily factors such as screen use, lighting conditions, sleep, and overall lifestyle. For this reason, many people pay attention to their daily habits, such as taking regular breaks during screen time, getting sufficient daylight exposure, and maintaining a varied diet.
