Antioxidants and oxidative processes
Antioxidants are a broad group of substances that include minerals, certain vitamins and bioactive compounds. The body is continuously exposed to factors such as physical stress, sunlight, nutrition and environmental influences, which can lead to oxidative processes. Oxidation itself is a natural phenomenon, and antioxidants are commonly associated with balancing these processes by interacting with free radicals.
Antioxidants in food and supplementation
Many antioxidants are naturally present in foods such as vegetables, fruits and nuts. Well-known examples include vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, coenzyme Q10, glutathione and alpha-lipoic acid. In addition to dietary sources, antioxidants are also available as individual supplements or as part of combined nutritional formulas, particularly when dietary intake may be limited.
Different forms of antioxidant compounds
Antioxidant supplements are available in various forms and molecular variations. Examples include astaxanthin, a carotenoid with a natural colouring function, ubiquinol as a form of coenzyme Q10, and R-alpha lipoic acid, which is both water- and fat-soluble. These compounds are offered in capsules, powders, liquids and topical formulations, depending on the product.
