Fermented ginger by Dr. Mercola
Fermented Ginger is a unique and new product. Per capsule it contains a combination of 200 mg of biologically fermented ginger root and 150 mg of the leaf extract of the herb Perilla frutescens. Ginger enjoys a number of health claims that await approval by the European Commission, including beneficial effects on the digestive system, the immune system and heart and blood vessels.
Supplemented with patented Benegut®
This product’s two core ingredients form an ultimate synergy. In addition to fermented ginger, this formula contains a patented and standardized Perilla leaf extract: Benegut®. Perilla frutescens, also known as the beefsteak plant or Japanese basil, is related to mint and is mainly found in China, Korea and Japan. Benegut® is standardized on Perilla's main active ingredient, Vicenin-2, on rosmarinic acid and a special flavonoid. Traditionally, this herb is often used for the same applications as ginger. Benegut® Perilla Extract is well documented.

Healthy digestion
Digestive and intestinal problems are common in modern Western society. Issues such as stress, bad dietary habits, genetic predisposition, (over)sensitivities to food or to food additives can all play a nefarious role. Digestion can also be affected during travel. For a long time ginger root has played an important role in various ailments in Eastern, but now also Western, traditions. And that's for a reason: the beneficial effects of ginger are well documented. Roman traders originally brought ginger from Arab countries to Northern Europe. Here it became the most popular spice during the Middle Ages.
Target groups and use
For various reasons women are up to six times more likely to have abdominal complaints. Abdominal complaints or morning sickness may develop during pregnancy. Women therefore often choose this product. Dr. Mercola’s fermented ginger offers solid support for everyone on a daily basis, including during travel or staying abroad.
Bioactive compounds in the ginger root
The most valuable part of ginger is the root, or rhizome, that grows underground. The oily resin in this root contains many bioactive compounds, including 6-gingerol, 6-shogaol and 6-paradol. During drying, 6-gingerol is converted into the more active 6-shogaol, a compound found in very low concentrations in fresh ginger. The compound 6-paradol is the stable, bioactive metabolite of 6-shogaol. This final metabolite evidences the most activity of all three compounds.
Immediately usable, active 6-paradol
When dried ginger reaches the lower intestines after consumption of dried ginger, 6-shogaol naturally ferments into the more bioavailable 6-paradol. However, this does not happen optimally for everyone. With ginger that has been fermented beforehand, and where 6-gingerol has already been converted into 6-paradol, the body no longer has to make this conversion itself. It can therefore use the active ingredients directly.
The benefits of fermentation
Dr. Mercola has extensive experience working with fermented ingredients. Fermentation optimizes the benefits of a plant substance and changes its nutritional value. For example, fermentation helps to pre-convert ingredients, increase certain nutrients, improve the biological accessibility of minerals, increase the biological
availability of antioxidants, and to facilitate the creation of unique metabolites.
