Brain Food™: Neurotransmitter support

Neurochemistry is the whole of biochemical processes in the brain. Neurotransmitters play an important role in this as signaling molecules. This extremely complex interplay varies from person to person, but also from season to season. Genetic as well as epigenetic factors (such as the environment, nutrition, sleep and exercise) can influence this. A 'brain food supplement' contains natural substances and precursors of specific neurotransmitters.

Vitamin B3: Niacinamide

Vitamin B3, in the form of Niacinamide, is an essential vitamin and a cofactor for the metabolism of fat, carbohydrates and proteins. After ingestion Niacin can cause sensations of 'rush' and flushing. Niacinamide does not have that effect. Vitamin B3 contributes to energy production in the brain through the production of ATP. The vitamin is a cofactor for many critical processes, including in the brain. Niacinamide is a precursor to NAD and NADH: it acts as an antioxidant and plays a role in the synthesis of neurotransmitters such as dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin. As a substrate for ATP production, niacinamide plays an indirect role in cognition, focus, concentration and memory.

Rhodiola rosea

Rhodiola rosea, also called rose root, is known as a soothing adaptogenic herb. Rhodiola has been used for various purposes in China for hundreds of years. The plant is native to cold mountainous areas in North America, Northeast Europe and North Asia, among other places. Rhodiola belongs to the so-called phyto-adaptogens.

L-tryptophan

L-Tryptophan is an essential amino acid used by the body as a building block for serotonin synthesis, among other purposes. The most common dietary sources of tryptophan are nuts and seeds, meat and dairy products, fish, and legumes. Proteins from food are broken down into L-tryptophan. With the help of the right cofactors, L-tryptophan is converted in the body into the substance 5-HTP. 5-HTP is then converted back into serotonin.

Magnesium and Zinc Glycinate

The minerals magnesium and zinc glycinate are chelated forms of magnesium and zinc, respectively, with the amino acid glycine. Magnesium and zinc are important cofactors for the conversion of L-tryptophan into serotonin. In addition, magnesium and zinc enjoy various health claims in relation to psychological functioning, including state of mind and a clear mind, the nervous system, energy metabolism and overall metabolism.
