MSM - OptiMSM® by Doctor's Best
MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) from patented OptiMSM® is a very pure form of organically bound sulfur. It is also known as methyl sulfone or dimethyl sulfone. Sulfur is mainly found in protein-rich tissues. Sulfur is a component of sulfur-containing amino acids (methionine and cysteine) and of the vitamins thiamine (B1) and biotin (B8). MSM is a bioactive sulfur form that occurs naturally in all living organisms. MSM is rapidly and well absorbed.
OptiMSM®, 99.9% pure MSM
Sulfur is a macro mineral, just like calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium and phosphorus. We need sufficient daily amounts of macro minerals. OptiMSM® is MSM purified over four production steps to no less than 99.9% pure MSM. The product is free from heavy metals and other types of pollution. Each batch of capsules is tested by an independent laboratory and has been designated Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The product is therefore completely safe to use, even in high doses.

Sulfur in food
Eating sulfur-rich foods helps to consume sulfate. Animal protein is an important source of sulfur. Other foods include coconut oil, olive oil, organic eggs, legumes, garlic, onions, Brussels sprouts, asparagus, kale, broccoli, and wheat germ. Sulfur in our diet is partly lost when food is heated or during long-term food storage. As we age, the compound’s bodily levels may decrease.
Sulfur is essential for life
Since the beginning of life, there has been a sulfur cycle between the geosphere and the biosphere, as an essential part of all life forms. Organic sulfur-bearing molecules, such as the amino acids methionine and cysteine, are ubiquitous in Earth's history and have even been detected on Mars. Sulfate (sulfur plus oxygen) is the fourth most abundant anion, or negatively charged ion, in the blood. It occurs throughout the body, in various forms. It is an essential part of extracellular matrix proteins.
Sulfur from sunlight
Just like vitamin D, the body's own sulfate levels depend not only on our diet, but also on exposure to sunlight. It is produced in the skin through a sunlight-dependent biochemical reaction. Production via sunlight is the optimal way. Diet and supplementation play an additional role. Vitamin D and other vitamins and bioactive substances must be bound to sulfur for transport in the blood.
